Penn State fires coach Franklin after 12 seasons

It's wild how fast the wheels fell off. From a preseason Natty contender to the unemployment in less than two months.

I wonder what was going on behind the scenes because that is a huge buyout? I also wonder where he goes next?

Mark Richt would have been a perennial playoff coach with his record had the playoff been 10 years earlier.
I think it's similar to Mark Richt at Georgia. Consistently winning 9-10 games a year on average, but never or rarely winning the big games that matter.

Like JMS said, BUT Kirby Smart was a damn miracle and completely unproven hire. It would be like if Penn State hired Brian Hartline today

“Hey prospective coach, yeah so we just fired a coach with 6 double digit win seasons in 12 years and made the B1G title game and national semis just 10 months ago after a bad two weeks BUT we will give you time to build your program!”

Sure that’s gonna be a good selling point!

They won’t have a problem selling the job.

They’ve been a top 10 program the last 3 years and if take out 2020-2021 when college football was wonky, top 10 for a decade.

I think this is way too reactionary.

I feel the same, especially since Penn State isn't fiscally competitive with Ohio State or Michigan (either in terms of overall budget or NIL), two schools that completely dwarf anyone else in their conference with the possible exception of Oregon.

And now they'll be spending big just to (1) pay off Frankling and (2) convince the next guy that it'll be okay if he's not beating Ohio State and Michigan and making the playoffs by year three.

I actually think they will
It’s going to be interesting to see the reaction if their first target or two say no. I think everyone thinks they’ll go hard after Cignetti but Indiana goes far (think Semi’s), why would he make the jump? Indiana is investing like gangbusters into the program
