Pearl

Your missing the point.. You said they listen to their coaches advice.. While that's true alot of times.. That doesn't always factor into their decision hat.. Regardless if they play in the CPL or not.
Find me an elite prospect in the last 20 years out of the CPL who disregarded the wishes of his family and coaches.

so, Hat, would Michigan offer Pearl?
I doubt it. Given the history of controversy involving Bruce and Illinois, my guess is that they would look elsewhere. If I were them, he would be the first call I made. However, I think external factors negate Pearl being a realistic option.

Hat how long do you think Pearl will be a Vol? 1-3 more years at least? If he builds us to a title he will have built his own legacy.

I see the way he has the offense set up to work now. I wonder with the newer recruits every year if he will keep the same style off. or change gears to a different style. Our size forces his hand now I think.

I think he's generated such notortiety with our brand, he'd struggle to replicate that anywhere else. He's here for a while in my mind.

Good point. Wearing a maize jacket for the UM-MSU game would seem a little played out.

The Big 10 league office wants absolutely no part of Bruce Pearl coaching in their league.

Good point here.

I think that it was also said that Michigan would match anything that Tennessee would pay or something along those lines. I thought Michigan had kinda created a reputation for trying to get by with paying people less instead of going out and trying to out-bid someone.

I'd appreciate it if someone knowledgeable (e.g., Hat) could give a relatively impartial assessment of Pearl's basic culpability in the Illinois incident. I know the general facts (Pearl taped a phone conversation, turned it into the NCAA, the subsequent investigation unearthed some other violations, etc.), but I don't know enough about the world of college basketball recruiting to know whether A) it's just sour grapes on the part of Illinois, or B) Pearl actually did behave unethically. How would the average basketball coach unconnected with the situation regard Pearl's actions?

The coaches I am friendly with universally feel Bruce broke the coaching code. However, some of them cut him some slack, because Illinois made allegations against Bruce that led to him taping the conversations to cover himself.

Personally, I have real problems with what Bruce did. The proper thing, in my view, would have been to call the Illinois staff and tell them that he wasn't going to put up with their allegations. I'm not big on taping a conversation with a 17 year old kid. A coach needs to be man enough to protect himself without dragging a recruit into the middle of a storm.

Thanks -- that seems a fair assessment. Do you know if Pearl has said anything about the incident since then to indicate he thinks he might have handled it poorly?

He's indicated he has some regrets. I've never heard anything from him that sounded like an apology. Most of what I've seen indicates that Bruce still considers himself a victim in the whole matter.

Interesting. A shame -- it sounds like it was an ugly incident all the way around.
It was. It did major damage to the Illinois program and cost Jimmy Collins the opportunity to succeed Lou Henson. It also resulted in Bruce getting to the major college level about 10 years late.

Hat, since you are in touch with several coaches in the Division I sphere, I'm curious to know what the "grey area" is regarding what folks are doing to get recruits. Obviously, there are some things you cannot do, lest you get punished by the NCAA. However, what are coaches doing these days that "stretch the envelope" a bit in the recruiting arena?

Relationships with high school/AAU/JUCO coaches are the area where the envelope really gets pushed these days. Coaches set certain feeder programs up with their shoe company. Others hire HS/AAU/JUCO coaches specifically to get certain players. The NCAA can't really do anything about it, thus that's a potential advantage that coaches exploit.
