Technically, yes. In reality they were buying 16 because Peyton was assigned to it. The point is, the number doesn't BELONG to the player, it belongs to the University. That's just the fact. I don't know who you work for but at my level, I sign an agreement with the company I work for that ANYTHING that I develop that pertains to their business (whether on their time or mine) belongs to them. They pay for the patent and put my name on it, but I don't own it. Same for the numbers, the players don't own them......period.
Besides if it hadn't been Peyton Manning it would have been someone else's....Tee Martin sold quite a few jersey's too, Clausen, Ainge, Bray..hell Crompton had a ****load of fans wearing number 8 jerseys...what do they get for it, all were given opportunities of NFL careers, treated like kings thru college and oh yeah a college education....plus you think if Al Wilson needed a job there wouldn't be someone step up and GIVE him a "PR" position making a comfortable living....Get Real!
