Pandemic told everything

I think the pandemic has shown where we really stand in the SEC. Without any cupcakes on the schedule it’s pretty obvious we are at the bottom of the conference and we’ve been there for a while. What does everyone else think?
Totally agree. If you wanted a litmus test for where you stand, an all SEC schedule would be it. There is no hiding.

Great point.

Well said. I held a little hope after our winning streak to end last year even though it was against mostly bottom dwellers. From a fans view this season is what we always wanted. An all conference measuring stick.Sadly the results are not good.Who’s worse in the SEC? Vandy? (Lord don’t let us lose to Vandy). I’m not confident we come out with a win and a 2-8 or 3-7 record is a real possibility.I hate to say it but It’s time for change.

I never put much stock in the "streak" due to who it was against, but it was a positive and got us some good press. The positive press makes the fall from grace that much more painful. As fans we WANT to believe, even when our brain tells us otherwise. There is no rest with an all-SEC schedule. Everyone is capable on a given day of winning...Lord help us, even Vandy. I fully expect to get their absolute best.

I was against the Pruitt hire from the get-go, and other than recruiting he hasn't done much to change my mind. Unfortunately, given the extension and the Covid tainted season, I don't believe they'll do anything before the end of next year. We always wait too long.

I think everybody has known this for a while.

Yes, there are no pancakes in the schedule this year to pad the overall win total but we've been below .500 in conference play 8 times in the last 12 years. That's only one less time than Kentucky and Vandy. We're on pace to make that 9 of 13.

The pandemic didn't show anything. There's been tons of warning signs with this hire that existed back in 2017 continued into 2018 and 2019 and have really manifested themselves this year....

What it’s exposed is we have a remarkable ability to hire “up-and-coming” coaches and always crap out. You’d think just based on pure dumb luck we would have gotten it right once. But it is pretty clear, we haven’t.

I still don't think we are at the bottom of the SEC with our talent. I do think it was a litmus test for who can coach and who can't. Some coaches were able to take the lemons that Covid gave them and turn it into lemonade. Covid showed that Pruitt can't squeeze lemons. Covid showed our flaws at the coaching level. Our talent isn't the best in the SEC, but certainly not close to the bottom either. Put a different, talented leader at HC and I believe this Tennessee team at least looks more ready for games and isn't getting blown out by teams they should beat.

The parts I highlighted, if the 1st doesn’t happen then the 2nd won’t.
I’m not sure it would if the 1st did happen. Sadly, that’s our outlook for the near future.
To make things worse, HB could come in next year , elevate the offense to where we beat a few bottom feeders and we continue down this dead end road even further, like Dobbs did with botch.

Ok you said you don’t think Covid is a litmus test for who can coach but It showed who can ?

If it was purely based on talent, the only teams Tennessee would be losing to every year are Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. We also could lose to a strong rotating West opponent (e.g., LSU, Auburn, A&M) or a strong P5 OOC opponent depending on the year. We are always more talented than whoever the 3 creampuffs are on the schedule, Mizzou, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Vandy.

In any given year, about the worst that Tennessee should be is 7-5. That's losing to Florida, Georgia, Alabama, a strong SEC West team, and a strong P5 OOC team. There is absolutely no good reason why Tennessee should have multiple 4, 5, or 6 win seasons over a 10+ year period of time. That only happens due to self-inflicted wounds.

I don't disagree at all, the biggest thing it has exposed in all honesty is coaching. We are not out scheming or working anyone in the SEC. I think we caught a couple teams off guard early in the season and something broke in the mentality when Georgia was laying their beat down in the second half
