Owens asks for release.

Case in point; Austin Nichols was heavily recruited and the fans, in many quarters, felt that he was gonna sign with UT. As we all should know...he is now a Memphis Tiger.
And that was also 3 years out. If Carmichael and Owens needed a year each to improve (mentally, physically, etc) before they played SEC ball, it would have been more wise to get players who were more physically ready to play (like McGhee). It's easy to look back and declare Woodson a bust, but why did the staff think his attitude about work ethic would suddenly change? I think the risk was worse than the reward.

How was the risk worse than the reward....that's scholly would have not been used? CDT took the best available he could get...ideally u would recruit at a higher level than Tariq and willie

Get somebody who doesn't have a history of attitude problems and work ethic problems. I'm sure there was someone else out there not named Eric McKnight and Domonic Woodson.. You're even the dude usually complaining about basketball recruiting. Our season would have been way better had we had a player who could actually guard the post.

I did complain about his recruiting but u r expecting too much as late as he was hired....almost every player available had issues....u don't turn away a player as talented as Woodson that late in the game.

I'd rather have a kid who says "I don't care if Coach Barnes recruits over me. I'm going to work hard, get better, and learn from him and his staff, and whoever he brings in here is just going to have to wait their turn. That's what several of the holdovers did when Bruce Pearl came to town.

If Owens doesn't believe he can do that, then he's better off somewhere else and we're better off giving the scholarship to someone else. Give him his release and wish him luck.

Mostella has great potential.

I know he had a high ranking but he just didn't look very good out there for lack of a better word. I remember him hitting a huge three against Arkansas at home I think but other than that I thought he was very disappointing being so highly ranked.

Honestly other than McGhee I didn't think any of Donnie's recruits looked very promising. I get that they were thrown in the fire but still. Wasn't Punter an All American JUCO?

Mostella has the same issues as Owens; strength and weight. Talent isn't really a question. He needed to improve his knowledge of Tyndall's defensive system, but he is probably one of our best man-to-man defenders, so that learning curve will be null and void going forwarx in Barnes' system.

Agreed with the weight/strength assessment, because he struggled absorbing contact when driving (freakishly) in the lane. The matchup zone Donnie ran confused Mostella, you could tell just by looking at him play defense. But Barnes runs a zone primarily correct? Hopefully Mostella does a bit better in a normal zone or man-to-man.

Anyone who didn't see potential in Mostella, I don't know what to say lol. He scored 18 or 19 against VCU the first game of the year.. Mostella's confidence went way down and started settling for contested 3s instead of attacking the rim.

My thoughts on Mostella at least.

Mostella will be good. Barnes plays whatever fits the team and the matchup. Some years man. Some years zone.

I also think Mostella, Punter, Baulkman and Armani are better suited playing in transition. Maybe Barnes will loosen the reins on offense a bit and these guys can get into a better flow. If he does, I think Mostella's talent will start to be more apparent.

No, Armani isn't being recruited over.

I do like him, but he's a 6' 4" down low guy. Don't see many top teams with that in the repertoire. Just saying if we found a 6' 9" replacement we would let Armani come off the old bench. Armani was a bright spot on a not so good team. If he added any kind of outside shot then he might be a heckuva 6 guy or possibly 3, but we get dominated down low because we have a way more athletic Dane Bradshaw playing the four.

I honestly bet Armani would beat whoever for a starting position. I mean Armani beat out 6'9-6'10 Kenny Hall his freshmen year when we were about half way into SEC play. Not that Kenny Hall is the best example but he was a top 60 four star player, going by rankings.

Did you know Armani was recruited as a point guard?

He will be able to shoot next year. He's a gym rat working on that shot. It got better this year but still not good.

I hope he does. He's had 3 years to develop a 3 ball and it's not there yet. Feel that at his height he should have realized that he needed one For any chance at playing ball post college.
