Our year is almost here

With our talent and schedule 8-4 is the floor.

The way it happens can be the difference in CBJ proving himself worthy of continuing to be our HC or raise further questions and might confirm current questions.

8-4 may be the ceiling for this team considering the variables.

Possible 2 QB system to begin the year
Playing GT, @ Florida and Georgia all in September is not the way a young team should start the season.
Breaking in a new OC
Lacking in experience and leadership within depth chart
OL and DL are concerns...again.

Ga Tech is not in the same league as Fl and Ga.

Only the new guys are unfamiliar with our approach. The veterans will mold the new ones into shape. The crazy part is some of the newest to the program are stone cold veterans of football.

I like our chances.

GT has won 2 out of last 3 v.s. their in state rival.

Keep in mind, GT rushes for an average 258 ypg. in 2016.
UT rushing defense gave up 218 ypg average in 2016.

That is their strength v.s. Tennessee's weakness. Those are numbers you can't ignore, simply due to the fact that GT's running game continues to produce solid numbers as quoted above, year after year.

Here lately, the Tennessee defense has been giving up huge chunks of yards on the ground the last few years (healthy depth chart or not) and when comparing the two teams this way, it should be enough reason to worry and take this one seriously. GT can expose our defense and probably will at one point during this game.

As a fan base, let's hope the breaks go our way for a change.

Of the starting 22 on offense & defense (plus PR & KR) I think the only 2 not missing time was Josh Dobbs and Derrick Barrnett. Sometimes both starters and back ups were out. Just part of the game that falls under "luck"

You "think" or you know? Cause I've really tired of people on here throwing out sentences like "well, we were down to our 4th string on defense most of the year....." type statements.

Also, which is it? Did players just "miss time" or were they out and we had to play our 3rd and 4th guys?

Btw, without looking, I know for certain that both Jennings and Malone played all 13 games last year on offense and Gaulden did as well on defense. And I'm all but certain Kelly was available all 13 games and would've played in every game had he not been 3rd string before Hurd moved on.

Was just reading an article about this. Said that by October we had at least 15 starters affected by injury.
Not all of them missed the season and not all of them 100% upon returning.

It was noted, along with very few other high profile teams, as well above average for a season. The kind that certainly affects both games and game plans. One person was quoted as saying they had never seen anything like it in 20 years.

Anyway, that's what the article said, don't know if that helps.
Nothing I can say about Kelly, not sure how to prove he could have played in every game had he been a starter from the beginning. I just don't see a way of knowing if he would have been injured or not.

Because VN posters know more than every member of the sports media who have Tennessee way beyond the top 20

Fans KNOW more about the team they religiously follow than national sports "experts" who glance at rosters and make guesses? The hell you say! :)

Ga is a bad team, with a coach in over his head. Smart will be a better HC next time around. Huge gamble by Ga. He played for them so it's worth the gamble.

Last year's weakness is not necessarily going to be a weakness week 1. Maybe by week 13 we can field a similar team(All between as well.).

It will be a dog fight or a dog fighting clothes.

It's a shorter list to name who didn't get hurt out of the 22.

Dobbs
Jennings
Malone
Gaulden
Vickers
Barnett

That can't be all if them.

This is NOT a young team, they are young in spots, QB, RB, WR and DE but they are experienced, talented and deep everywhere else. If the Vols find suitable replacements for Dobbs, Malone, Kamara, and Barnett they could have a better season than last year. This team certainly reminds me of the 2004 team than won the SEC East.

Every year's a potential championship year for the Vols.

Yes, we have questions in spots, questions that will need to be answered. Questions like a new QB, health on the DLine, and how the LBs shake out. The amazingness of the 2017 season rides on the answers.

But no mistake: every year is a potential championship year. Love him or hate him, that's the single biggest thing Butch has done for us, making that true.

What is your definition of "championship year"?...Division, Conference, Bowl win? Just curious.

The term, championship, gets tossed around so much and over the last few years has expanded.

I personally see two championships in the Volunteers (and all other SEC teams) lexicon: SEC and National.

Some might add the East to that list; that's fine.

The SEC Championship is the best on the planet. For the Vols It starts with winning the East and then playing it the SEC title game. After winning the SEC, everything else is icing on the cake IMHO.
