Ok, let me ask it this way. What is our scheme designed to do? Rush the ball up the gut from the shotgun with a line who can't run block? Fake the read option over & over again? NEVER throw the ball to a player in motion, only to a stationary player waiting for the ball?
Please help me...
It's the same "scheme" that ran up on down the field last week against the number eight team in the country. Alabama DOMINATED every position on the field. When you get manhandled like that, any scheme is going to look inept. They whipped our asses and it wasn't even close. It was a nice reminder that the program has some work to do.
BTW, Alabama is #1 in the country.
Didn't this scheme just put up ~700 yards against Chavis and a top 10 Texas A&M team? As much as I hate to admit it, I think you have to give Bama's defense a lot of credit today. JMO
You refuse to answer the question because you don't have an answer. No one does. This scheme has no identity of purpose. It literally does nothing well.
The offense isn't something unique to Tennessee. There's a ton of teams running the zone read. The basic idea is that the oline accounts for stunt, etc by blocking based on what the d line gives. The runners use the depth created by the shotgun for the vision to see the crease. When every lineman is getting beat, it doesn't work.
The routes the guys are running clearly allow for catches in stride, but far too often JD either doesn't or can't make the throw. Or, he doesn't get the opportunity.
I don't want to be the guy that's arguing in favor of this offense. But, in any offense, players have to win matchups.
I honestly haven't a clue what it is intended to accomplish. It doesn't create mismatches. It isn't dynamic. A Senior QB rocket scientist can't make reads, find open WRs. 30% of the plays go for 0 yards or less. I just don't get it.
It can't be solely o-line play. I'm watching a freshman QB carve us into pieces. So if y'all understand it, please enlighten me.
