Other head coach options (merged)

Zero Head Coaching experience

Limited OC experience

Never had to make a huge in game decision where the out come of the game is at stake.

Need I say more?

The better question is, How is he a upgrade from what we have now?

There isn't anything to supprot that answer, because he isn't an upgrade from Butch!

Um, do you not remember the Rose Bowl last year? Please tell me how his offense has never been in a big game with the result on the line.... You're wrong.

Also, he is an upgrade because his coaching is competent and he actually develops talent. Look at Darnold's quick rise last year once he became starter.

Also, the fact that you think being offered a position coach at UT is the equivalent as being offered the head coaching job is laughable. If he got offered that job, he ain't leaving on his own accord. Would be a lifer here.

Fulmer was a coordinator before he was the head guy, you do remember that right?

Well, we see how our current coach is hitting homeruns with this, so how would Tee be a downgrade again?

LOL. Tee's smartest move is avoiding Butch's offer. At the time it wasn't worth being a position coach at UT over USC. Butch only reached out to Tee for a PR move. Tee made the best move for him and the family. There was no upside to come to UT over USC. Also, if he was here, he would be stained with the Butch connection. There is no way his offense/coaching would be anywhere close to what it is now at USC if he stayed at UT.

Also, in his time at USC as OC, he's currently 14-3 with the future #1 draft pick in next year's draft. There is nothing to suggest that he would be a lateral move.

What do you want in a new coach?

1-Comes from winning experience/pedigree
2-Can recruit nationally/top grades against other schools
3-Experience of coaching competence/in game decision making

You can have those things being a head coach or being a coordinator.

Tee wanted to stay in California because of his wife, He showed up to his interview at Tennessee in sweaty pants and a hoodie. He doesn't take Tennessee serious at all. He doesn't even conseider this home I would bet, he will always be a step lower than Peyton Manning and he doesn't like that about Tennessee. he is a joke of a option and won't be a serious candidate for Tennessee watch and see.

He has no qualifications to be the next coach at Tennessee!

If I am missing his qualifications please enlighten me!

He has just as many as any other coordinator on the list, its really not that hard. You just hate Tee.

You're insane. He doesn't become the hot coach he is now if he came to Tennessee under Butch. We have seen Butch micromanage and have YES men only as assistants. And you're also crazy if you think he would have been OC under Butch.

Butch only interviewed him because of a PR skit. Tee turning us down for a position coach speaks volumes about his thoughts and perception of Butch.

And once again, he does a lot more than what we have now in Butch.

He hasn't had any major coaching blunders in his offense that has blown wins. Butch has.

He has actually developed players at every stop he has been at. Butch can't say that.

Tee recruits with the best of them. Butch does that. So in three areas of coaching, Tee does all 3 very well. Butch only can 1 thing well and that is recruiting.

You must really hate Tee. Are you mad that he won a Natty for us and not Peyton? I guarantee you Coach Fulmer and Peyton would gladly support him being our coach. Especially, if USC goes on to the Playoff.

You and I are not going to agree on this so I will stand down, But Mark My words he will not coach here as our head coach if Butch is fired this year.

he won't even be considered a high level candidate, if he is then we aren't even a top 20 job in the country anymore!

He may be ready in a few years but He will be a lateral move from Butch never an upgrade!

How would he not unite the fanbase? Let us look back at our current/previous two coaches.

Butch- Midwest guy and full of catchphrases. Can talk a good game but can't back it up on the field.

Dooley- Screams Southern Coaching Heritage. Thought he deserved the job and because of his last name, he felt entitled that recruiting and performance would be like Daddy. Also, his momma was crazy.

Lane- West coast guy. Was hired to make a drastic Culture change and turn UT to Southern Cal of the East.

Now circle back to Tee. He checks a lot of boxes:
1-He stayed away from Butch's staff, which is prolly the best and smartest career move he ever made.
2-Has risen quickly thru the coaching ranks due to performance and recruiting.
3-Has vast experience of coaching in different conferences and parts of the country
4-Has a consistent track record of developing talent since he started coaching (WE DON'T HAVE THAT NOW)
5-He has been on fire in his OC career has developed the future #1 draft pick in April barring any injury.
6-Former Vol who gets what Tennessee Football is about and won't bull sh!t the fans (WE HAVE A LOT OF BULLSH!TING THE FANS GOING RIGHT NOW)

I am sorry, but I just don't see why he would be a bad hire if Chip and others turn us down. If USC goes on to the playoff and makes the Natty (BIG IF, I KNOW), he would be a big part of that.

At the end of the day, we can hire someone who talks a big game or someone who puts their head down and gets to work. We haven't had that for some time. Tennessee does better when have a Vol running the show. I find it very hard to believe that people would be pissed if we fired Tee. If hiring Tee is a "sad expectation", than fans have truly no appreciation for former players that happen to be good coaches.

Also, there is ZERO REASONS to saying he would be fired in less than 4 years. There is zilch that suggest that. No coaching issues, no recruiting issues, and no player development issues. Our current coach has 2 of those 3 and he has lasted to 5 seasons. Tee would be a huge upgrade. Also, he has an offense that includes being under center.

I would support Tee all day and think he would do very well coming home. Same reasons I like Scott Frost, with the only difference is Frost would have HC experience. I think we'd get in a bidding war with Nebraska but I like his style of football and think the fans would too. Either way, I'm good with taking one or the other NC winning QB with clear and obvious success as a coach.

Do you even watch football? There is a reason everyone is talking about how quickly his stock is rising in the coaching ranks. If USC goes to the playoff, and right now they are looking likely to do so, he will likely be the nations top assistant neck and neck with Venables at Clemson.

You really have some vendetta against Tee.

Tee may not be ready for the Tennessee HC position, but I think Chip Kelly is overrated and Les Miles is too old and if he couldn't win at LSU how will he win at UT. Dan Mullen is making good money at State and I don't see him wanting to come to Knoxville to make a little more money. I think UT will be shopping in the Kirk Satterfield, Brett Veneable market.

Only reason I am high on Tee is that if we can't get Chip or Mullen, I'd rather have Tee than hire Les. If Tee turned us down, I would be all in on Les.

I also would be sold on Tee if USC goes on to make the playoff which is looking very likely.

Tee's stock will never be higher once Darnold leaves for the draft after this year. Especially after a playoff year. He would come home for the Head gig.

I think Currie has him on the list. Some of the moves he has made so far has been about "restoring tradition." He just strikes me as a guy that would try to unite the fanbase with a move hiring Tee. Especially if Tee is coaching in the playoff.

Totally agree..If Currie pulls the trigger it will be on someone that likely unites the fanbase and makes him out to be a hero. Tee is certainly growing on me as a possibility. I can live with Mullen too. Les just says too much stupid stuff and I would like to have a coach that avoids the PR blunders.

I like Tee a lot, if it was up to me I give him the job today. My only concern is how young he is and what kinda connections he has ? I think the biggest problem with Tee right now would be fielding a quality staff... Just not been a consistent enough coaching tree that he has been under in my opinion. yea he could bring back Graham, but I just soon keep Gillespie at rb coach. Does Sanders make a lateral move to come be the O coordinator ? I doubt it. Thats my only problem with the hire

I think Tee’s experience across the country and conferences would have his network plentiful for a staff.

Also, I think having Phil and Peyton in your back pocket would be able to get him in the door with quality assistants. Also, if it is known he’s got a big budget for staff, he would have people knocking on the door.

I don't mean to burst a bubble here, but Tee was done extremely sh**ty in that situation. A formal contract had already been offered to someone else before Tee's plane even landed in Knoxville. That is the only time I have ever had first hand information of anything going on at UT.

LOL no it's not. Barely top 20

Name 20 better jobs genius.

I'm going to take the middle ground on this. Big picture, long-term no one would debate it is a top 10 job all things considered.

The issue is we are on our 4th coach in 10 years; have a fan base that ran off a basketball coach prematurely; assistant coach contracts that will hamper football budget for near term; unproven athletic director; etc., etc.

So for the immediate future, there are more questions than answers. A little, honest self-reflection can't hurt.

My guess is our best shot is grabbing the re-cycled big name that falls to the bottom of the domino chain or rolling the dice on an up and comer with local ties. Regardless, we are not getting a "sure thing" no matter what our big picture looks like.

Is anyone at the point where they would take Lane Kiffin back? If not, how far would we have to fall before you got to this point?

I am getting close to being at that point. I'm not there yet, but pretty dang close.
