I'll say a few things about this. I think regardless, you give Butch until the end of the year to right the ship. I believe he's earned that. 8-4 is just mediocre, but I think he would be fine, but really on the hot seat next year (like probably fired in the after the Florida game if we were to lose, see Les Miles). Anything more than 8-4 he's fine, anything less and he's out.
Now onto other options.
Les Miles: Eh, he did really well with Sabans recruits, maybe a little above average without. Has to have a top notch offensive coordinator/ QB coach because that was his downfall.
Chip Kelly: He's proven to be a problem in the NFL. Players hated him, Fans hated him, Owners hated him. He took a good team and ran them into the ground. He also hates recruiting, so that's not a good thing at all. He did have a lot of success at Oregon, but would really need a great defensive Coordinator to make it week in and week out in the SEC. He's used to PAC-12 ball where defense is rarely played. He would be a splash hire, but I just don't think he would be best for our program. Maybe if he brings in Helfrich as OC, that makes it better as well.
Brent Venables: Ultimately the guy we want and need. I think after going with 3 straight offensive minded coaches (you could argue that Dooley didn't have a brain), I think we need to go defense. This guy is the best in the business, truly. Held the reigning heisman trophy winner to 21 points, help Auburn to 6 points. Has won a national championship against the best Alabama team I've ever seen. He's the guy. Of course, he's never been a HC at this level, but I'd be willing to give it a shot. He's a great recruiter as well (finished 40th last year in recruiter rankings). Honestly, hire this man.
Gruden: No list is complete without Gruden. He's been out of coaching awhile, doesn't seem to want to coach again. Let's just move on with our lives.
Jim Bob Cooter: With the success he's had as a OC in the NFL, he at least put's his name in consideration for being our HC. He's might be unlikely but you never know.
Possible assistant coaches
Defense:
DC/D-Line Coach: Marion Hobby - Coached with Venables together at Clemson, Hobby played here, currently in the NFL as a defensive line coach. Kacy Rodgers (Jets DC) could be another name to look out for.) Brady Hoke only for D-line coach, don't want a repeat of Oregon's D from last year, but he probably wouldn't stay.
DBs: Terry Fair - Played here, has had pretty good success at Colorado State, pretty good recruiter. It would be a good hire. I'm not opposed to keeping Charlton Warren either, he has been a good recruiter as well, and the DBs are slightly improved, but to be fair he has to make up for all the bad Martinez put into them.
LBs: Dale Jones (App State LB coach) Played here, has been at App State for 22 years now. Lance Thompson (USCe Dline coach), great recruiter, produced great results for a lot of great defenses. Coached here with Lane and Dooley, probably one of our best options here. This is also a position that Venables coaches, so they could maybe get away with a younger coach (Like Kevin Beard) and develop him
Offense:
OC: If we are going only former UT players/coaches, Randy Sanders has had great success at FSU. Throw out the name Jim Bob Cooter as well, though going from NFL OC to College OC can only be seen as a step down. While, Larry Scott isn't terrible, I still would like to get away from the offense we run currently. Have to mention Tee Martin, he hasn't set the world on fire as OC, but he's looked pretty good and could coach QBs or WRs. He would be a candidate for the HC position most likely as well, but I don't see him being as ready as Venables.
WR: Kevin Beard is fine, but we could probably do better at the same time. Not really sure here to be honest as a replacement. Dameyune Craig would be my first option, but I don't know if that is realistic.
RB: KEEP Gillespie please. RBs have never been the problem. They run hard, typically hold onto the ball well, block well. He is a great recruiter, even better developer of talent. If he leaves, definitely have to get Jay Graham back, we had similar success with him here.
OL: Again, I would want to keep Walt Wells. O-Line has really looked pretty good, he's a fantastic recruiter, probably our best on our staff. Players seem to like him, and he's getting pretty good results through 3 games.
QBs: Let the OC handle that probably. Like Canales as a person, but Dormady hasn't looked fantastic this year, Guarantano hasn't really progressed.
