OT Playcalling (merged)

Despite the refs, UT had their chances. The refs didn't cause our defense to make yet another lowlight play on defense where they missed a gazillion tackles and basically quit on a play. The refs didn't have our head coach channeling his inner Hal Dummy play calling. No, this one is all on UT. We earned this embarrassing loss.

I was guardedly optimistic about Heupel based on the season, but now I'm not so sure. He lost a lot of goodwill tonight.
If you lost optimism over this game then I don’t know what to tell you. The guy took a bunch of spare parts and castoffs and turned it into something that was somewhat enjoyable to watch. We lost our best offensive and defensive players to the portal, and just had a guy with like 3 career receptions turn into one of the best WRs in the league.

Well, the season if official over now so hopefully CJH is taking notes of his mistakes so next season will be an improvement. This positive comment is brought to you courtesy of my second bottle of Veuve Clicquot

Did anyone have faith the defense could have stopped them if we kicked a FG in OT? (Sure we will never know, but maybe he was playing the odds).
It’s not unlike Derek Dooleys team with Bray at QB and Sunseri as DC. I’d rather put my chances on Bray to win or lose than take a chance on the defense (which Dooley did not and we lost to frickin Missouri). Either way we go, we get the Big Orange Screw

I don’t think anyone is arguing that what Heupel did wasn’t crazy impressive this year. My declining optimism stems from the fact that imo Heupel’s play calling is highly concerning. We saw it in the Ole Miss game and we really saw it tonight. The end of regulation was really bad and Overtime wasn’t much better. He can easily improve and Im not saying he should be gone. But I think some of what we have seen is really concerning especially coming from such a bright offensive mind. On the bright side, however, his 4th down decisions today were fantastic which is the exact opposite of what it’s been throughout the year

Hire a budget coach and get budget play calling. The refs have been against you all night...why put the gsme in their hands?

Heupel brought excitement, but at this point he is a one trick pony coach and he showed tonight he is not a championship level coach yet. His end of regulation playcalling was terrible, he should have tried to get the FG attempt closer to 47 yards. Having Hooker throw back to back deep balls on low % throws is mind boggling. Saban would have played to win the game with runs or short passes to get a better FG attempt. Heupels playcalling in OT was just as bad. Even with those calls, that was a TD scored that the refs robbed from us. Purdue never waivered even with 3 turnovers. I fear next season will be more of the same, hot offense at times and below average defense. Flame away my friends of Vol Nation!

His handling of the final drive in regulation is much more questionable. I have no issue with going for it twice like he did in OT.

You’re 100% correct Boston. The math clearly shows a higher expectation by going vs kicking. You and I both know most people judge the correctness of a decision after the fact. If we score a TD in OT people on here would be calling him a genius. The calls were mathematically and strategically correct.

I don't know...I just don't get the ...play calling, the refs the rules...it makes the game intolerable at times .
I don't care what they say, that was a touchdown and we all know it.
Even other fans think we got done wrong. What's that tell ya?
A player should be able to fight until he is down!!!!!!!!!!

The going for a TD in OT was because the defense was terrible.

The other calls I don't have an idea, especially with time running out in regulation.

But seriously screw the refs

Huepel is terrible when it comes to short yardage play calling.
You’re an idiot. We ran for how many yards tonight? Pass protection isn’t our O lines strength and you are upset about calling the inside runs on short yardage situations when that’s what got us the majority of our 250+ yards on the ground tonight?

Hooker played hard but overthrew open receivers at least 5 x today. Cant blame that on anyone else
He also ran for key first downs like the one in OT on 4th down...and threw 5 td's. Could he have been better? Yeah, but he played hard and he wasn't the reason they lost.

Shouldn't have gone to OT.

Playcalling on last drive was trash. 2 deep balls overthrown, like most of the night, instead of making yardage to make the FG attempt within range?

I get the killer instinct, but Hooker isn't a good enough QB for that after the 1st Quarter.

..... and you don't run the ball? Get sacked for a 7 yard loss? Really?? Just dumb play calling.

We scored a TD. On top of that we scored more TDs than any UT team in history. And you’re complaining about 1 play call? On a drive we scored on?

So you move the pocket. That's what Purdues staff did.
