OT Playcalling (merged)

He called two plays at the end regulation that resulted in a receiver running wide open each time only to have Hooker blast one over their heads a mile. In overtime Fant missed the one assignment he had to block and if he had done so it would of been a walk in touchdown. Does Heupel call a perfect game... no... but if Hooker had not overthrown about 6 passes throughout the game, we win by 21.
This.

Lot of bad play calling. Should have never went to OT. Why the deep shots instead of getting in fg range is mind blowing. Defense was about as bad as it gets on top of that. We're nowhere close to where we need to be with the big boys and the gap got even wider after this recruiting cycle

Hooker was not good, you are correct.

I’ve been critical of the play calling all year and this game was just the perfect example of what I’ve said all year. The play calling makes no sense and we throw too much downfield. We need to get under center on short yardage but they will not do it.

Coaches cost us the game, in my opinion.

Heupal will get better, he’s got us on the right trajectory. Nobody outside of VFL thought we’d play this well this year. I’m not unhappy and look forward to next year. Ya it sucks to lose but hey, we made a bowl game which was not expected by most outside of our family.

Despite the refs, UT had their chances. The refs didn't cause our defense to make yet another lowlight play on defense where they missed a gazillion tackles and basically quit on a play. The refs didn't have our head coach channeling his inner Hal Dummy play calling. No, this one is all on UT. We earned this embarrassing loss.

I was guardedly optimistic about Heupel based on the season, but now I'm not so sure. He lost a lot of goodwill tonight.

The honeymoon is over for CJH. That was some horrible play calling and clock management. There is a thread about all the games Fulmer lost to less talented teams. This is number 1 for Heupel. Why did he only call runs up the middle or long passes- very few short passes. Very stupid to throw the two long passes at end of regulation when they only needed to kick a field goal. Not sure if I have seen such poor game planning since Butch.

Would like to hear his justification for not kicking the FG. I think that decision will haunt him for a while.

only until spring. It’s not that big a deal. We were on,y p,aching for pride and overall the team is looking good. CJH might not be the long term guy but at the very least he’s the guy that gets us to the long term guy. Go VOLS

I agree and like you I have not liked the play calling all year. Coach has a scheme that is really effective but he doesn’t mix anything into it to keep the defense guessing. I can’t stand three straight 2 yd gains. Reminds me of Fulmer.
