I don't understand why everyone rags on our defense. It was #1 in total defense in the Pac-10 last year, and it was above average when you look at defenses across the country. Not that it will take a great defense to shut down Tennessee's offense or anything.

I will say this, UT's chance of beating Oregon took a big hit with losing Martin and Walls. The key for you guys is going to be getting penetration and trying to get to our running backs, and your shot at that went down dramatically with the loss of those two.

It was your own teams state newspaper saying that your defense needs help.

The Oregonian has one of the worst sports sections that I have read. Bachman is a joke. Canzano is a joke. The sports writing staff is pretty terrible.

How will we ever recover from losing 2 very under-achieving players?

This game will come down to discipline and scheme...I like our chances as far as scheme goes.

I didn't think the pac 11 played defense...just kidding. But you have to admit there is a big difference between pac 10 defenses and SEC defenses.

Well, if you're looking at Florida, Alabama, etc., sure, there is a difference.

But Tennessee isn't in that category.

Pretty close to it...not in across the board talent but yeah, we were a very good defensive team last year until injuries got the best of us.

The year before we were #3 in total defense.

Okay, I agree that Oregon's defense is good but not national champion good (e.g. 'Bama/Florida). Martin and Walls....definitely sets TN back. I expect TN's offense to be improved this season...especially as the OL gets experience...barring any major injuries (knock on wood).

I'm more concerned with Oregon's offense....very quick players.

something we can all agree on....Oregon would beat the snot out of Georgia, lol.

Tennessee's defense is extremely thin and fairly inexperienced. There's no denying that.

Tennessee was #22 last year in total defense. Oregon was #35, Bama #2, Florida #4.

That was last year, no? Tennessee's D is not going to be as good as it was last year. Somewhere in the 45-50th range, if I had to guess.

Still, Tennessee wasn't in the same category as Alabama and Florida last year.

Did I say anything about who was what? Stop putting words in my mouth. I was just giving you the numbers.

That's why our defense kept us in a game where a lame legged kicker had two chances to beat the eventual national champions, right? Look, I'm not dogging Oregon but if there is one thing we've done consistently over the past decade its been fielding a decent defense. We may have some question marks, but this idea that we're going to roll over on the defensive side of the ball just because we're young or thin is asinine.

More close than you.

Childish comeback, but you seem to be nitpicking us when it was YOUR paper nitpicking you.

Oregon has to prove they aren't one hit wonders. If Chip can control the boys then they'll be fine this season. If they run wild without any discipline I see no problem with us sneaking in a win against them. Their field general was second string last season and was supposed to be this season. We'll see if he can lead them. A good thing about our D is that our linebackers are smart and surprisingly quick; our D-line has average size(some behemoths like Montori) but have crazy athleticism; and our secondary is green but every DB we have has great recovery speed from what I read/see. The D won't be UT's scape goat if we lose this game, just my opinion

So, you're a Duck, in Tennessee.

I've downed quite a number of your relatives with a very reliable over & under.

I don't have a feel, yet, for this years' Vols. And I could not care less about the Ducks. By all rights, this is a chance for them to brag about beating "an SEC power".

But...I have a feeling that this will be the game that makes people realize that Derek Dooley was the right hire. Which is bad news for you...and the Ducks.

Regardless, you're still an Oregon fan, and the fact is that the "proud history of Oregon Football" is best relegated to a placemat at Denny's. A win over a rebuilding UT team won't change that fact.

It is what it is.

Go Vols.

Yeah, a down year for us last year, and a good year for Bama ... made for a pretty close game.
