Picked up the papers this morning for my wife to cut coupons and I pulled the sports page out and skimmed through them. "The Oregonian" which is equivalent to "The Tennessean" had a few nasty things to say about our program and how we are always going to blame Lane Kiffin for our defeats over the next couple of years. "The Register-Guard", which is the local paper here in Coos Bay had this to say.

"Everything will fall into place if...... There's no hiccup at Tennessee. On talent alone, the Ducks will be favored to beat the Volunteers, who have a proud tradition but are in a tough spot after enduring Lane Kiffin's defection to USC. Still, playing at a massive SEC stadium could be a daunting environment."

The paper went on and talked about how Oregon's road record as been abysmal since the 2000 season. Paper says they are loaded up front with all 5 returning O-lineman, deep at RB, questionable at QB, and extremely thin at WR due to 2 being dismissed from the team and 2 more being declared academically ineligible. Says the defense needs to improve from last year, but there aren't many signs pointing to that actually happening. Living here and talking to fans about the upcoming game, I have found mixed reviews. Obviously, there are some that say Oregon will steam roll us this year, and some that think it will be Oregon's first true test of the season. IMO, the ones that seem to think Tennessee will be a harder win than most think, seem to be the ones that are more football intelligent. They seem to understand the X's and O's and the real happenings of a football game better.

Thoughts?

Their running game will be deadly, obviously we have a new system but i would be fearful of James going Dexter mccluster on us, however top their run - or keep it in check, and it should be a great game

If Tennessee can stop the run in that game, then it should be interesting.

Them returning there whole O-Line really hurts our inexperience D-Line especially at the D-Tackle position.

I would think that we will pack in the box. Make them throw with their unproven QB and thin WR corps to beat us.

If I were Wilcox, this is what I would do. But I am not so I can only hope. I will be confident in whatever scheme Wilcox has ready for them. He had a good game plan against their offense last year and I expect it will be the same or better this year.

I wonder how many teams are saying the same about us, oh yeah, add the inexperienced o-line to the equation.`

Allright, I would expect our D in the preceeding week will be relatively vanilla, but vs. Oregon, may Wilcox empty out the toy box and send the heat from every direction. Welcome to Neyland, kid!

I presently live in the Portland area....a few weeks ago I talked to a Comcast guy, a Ducks fan, who is absolutely convinced that Oregon will beat the snot out of TN because of one offensive player that single-handedly almost won a game for Oregon a year or two ago....I quickly reminded him that not even Tim Tebow or the eventual national champs beat the snot out of TN.

Native Oregonians--Portlanders in general--don't seem to know a lot about SEC football--probably not much about football in general. They don't follow it nearly as closely as Southerners (backyard football even seems non-existent in Oregon). I think TN will be a tougher game than many Oregon fans think...and many are envious of our tradition. I don't really give credence to anything the Oregonian or Oregon fans say about TN or the SEC--they really don't know what they're talking about. I agree, those with more Football acumen know that TN will not be an easy win...and not just b/c our stadium rocks. Having said this: When we moved here in '06, I saw a few Ainge fans wearing TN hats. IMO, TN will narrowly beat OR.

Jeff Maehl #23... enough of a threat to matter, but if we stop the run game... they'll be struggling. Granted, even if we stop it early, James will be fed the ball the entire game.

I find myself unable to get any feel on this year's team. We have too many question marks that will be hard to answer until we play a team like Oregon. Will Matt Simms be worth a crap? Will our young O-line over achieve or have growing pains? Will our thinness at certain defensive positions be a hindrance? Even with these I'm hesitant to believe that Oregon will run roughshod on us, but I'm not confident that we'll be winning the game.

There is no reason not to beat Oregon at home IMO. And yes Kiffen will get blamed if we lose, but he won't get credit if we win, that the way fans are.

I don't understand why everyone rags on our defense. It was #1 in total defense in the Pac-10 last year, and it was above average when you look at defenses across the country. Not that it will take a great defense to shut down Tennessee's offense or anything.

I will say this, UT's chance of beating Oregon took a big hit with losing Martin and Walls. The key for you guys is going to be getting penetration and trying to get to our running backs, and your shot at that went down dramatically with the loss of those two.
