Opinions on Kippy's Hiring

Do you want Kippy Brown to be named as the new HC at UT?

I think you should take him as the interim just to hold the fort for awhile until you get THE guy. Kep the committs who will stay anyway. Run like a Bowden/Jimbo Fisher thing for the next season and let the new guy ease into recruiting and establish relationships etc. Your going to lose some recruits but you can always use those ships next year for a bigger class.

But thats not true and you know it. We will still look for a "younger" and "better" coach.

Kippy would be coaching on a 1 year contract yearly that depends solely on the success of the team. If we win, we'll still look for someone to bring in as a coach-in-waiting, and if we lose, we'll complain about him being Head Coach because he was a desperation move.

What would you rather do give him a deal like fulmer and then pay him not to coach or just not give him a chance at all.

I like Kippy...

but the reason we are so worried about stability so much is because we got burned by Gay Kiffin. If we were searching for another coach at anytime we would be looking at wins as a head coach primarily.

54 is too old for a 1st time HC.

Both of those guys became Head Coaches 15+ years ago.

I'm with you in that I think hiring Kippy as HC would be a last-ditch act of desperation... but his age has nothing to do with it.

I am not saying give him 2 years and kick him out the door i am saying give him a chance to see what he can do if he dose good he stays if not we start looking agin when we have time to get the right guy. not just a guy..

So you're saying to give him 3+ years to see what he can do?

How long do you think that the Tennessee program, in its current state, could afford to undergo such an experiment?

Would the benefit be worth the cost?

You wouldn't place such restrictions on any other coach - nor is it likely that a legitimate coach would agree to come here under those terms.

Case in point: Cut just refused a job that he's likely wanted for 25+ years because they wouldn't let him bring his entire staff.

So, why would you want to place these on Kippy?

Brown has been loyal. It isn't fair to him to push him into the deep end as a stop-gap caretaker. If we MUST resort to a stop-gap, use Fulmer. Allow Brown to grow into a true head coach and reward him at that time.

Andre Johnson just called the Sports Animal and spoke very highly of Kippy. He's biased, of course.

So, you're suggesting that we bring Fulmer back, and appoint a 50+ year old lifelong assistant as the HCIW?

I don't know which of those I find most disagreeable, but were they placed on a list with, "genital warts" - they'd finish 2nd and 3rd on my list of wishes to come true.

Considering that he was or might be the 4th or 5th choice, I think its clear the AD doesnt see him as a legitimate HC anyway. He might have the best option possible doing it this way. That is, if he has time to show that he can run the program and improve it before they find anyone else, he might work his way into the HC job. As it is, he might be unemployed anyway. If he is the Vol die hard everyone says he is, then making such a sacrifice might not be a big deal to him.

If the AD doesn't seem to think that he's a legitimate candidate - why would anyone else?

And if he took it, it would be with the understanding that the search for his replacement would continue?

I'll hope that Kippy receives more respect than that, if only in light of his most recent actions.

I prefered Kippy over Cut. Both would be a gamble but at least we don't know what Kippy is capable of. We do know he's a Tenneessee man. And those saying "why do we have to have a Fulmer era person," we don't. But the vast majority of college coaches have ties to the university, and that's why there loyal. Three coaches have turned down Tennessee to stay at there current school.

Now in this day and age, money talks and offsets loyalty. That's why there is no such thing as loyalty in the NFL. If that's what you want to see, go watch the NFL. But college ball is different because of tradition and loyalty.

Andre Johnson just called the Sports Animal and spoke very highly of Kippy. He's biased, of course.

The media members of the Sports Animal have anointed themselves as the champions of Kippy's cause, and have been since this first went down. That much is clear.

While they slightly subdued themselves during the 12-24 hours that Cut's name was being seriously considered, but it has since resumed, and unabashedly so.

It seemed apparent that Andre Johnson was reading from a list of scripted answers to known questions, each accentuating Kippy's strengths (i.e. calming influence, knows how to coach) and diminishing his weaknesses (i.e. can he get you fired up before a game, etc.). I thought I was listening to a caller on the Jim Rome show.

Maybe I'm being too jaded about his call, but I'll say this: if speaking to Kippy's traits was so important to him as to call in with them, where has he been since Kippy was hired some 3-4 weeks ago?

Hooker just mentioned that Austin Ward is now placing Johnson's comments on the GVX page.....clearly, the machine is shovelling as much coal into this engine as they possibly can.

Again, maybe I'm being too skeptical. However, it'll be interesting to hear when Johnson next agrees to come on a local sports call-in show.

Maybe some will buy it.
