O line looks pretty awful

This is precisely why these 10-2 & 11-1 predictions are so absurd. With the exception of Iowa, the oline was awful. Same guys basically, yet the nation seems to have collective amnesia about how bad they really were.

I anticipate they will be better, but they need to walk before we can run. Obviously, they will need to be vastly improved to meet some of the expectations being lobbed around here.

It's not absurd because of two things.

First off, they're basing their predictions off of how good Dobbs played even with that terrible of an Offensive Line. So as long as they improve he will do even better. With Hurd a 2nd year and more experience on Dobbs you would only think our offense will play better than with what it ended last season.

But secondly, and the most important thing is, our defensive looks scary as I can remember in a long time. So no one will be scoring enough points to keep up with what dobbs can do with just an okay offensive line. 10-2 is actually very realistic if you ask me. I don't know who will be able to score enough points on us to beat us. You guys need to start thinking about more than just the one dimensional observations.

Also who is number 10 on offense? According to the front page, the only receiver we got last year was Williams, and #10 has a black stripe and Jennings has been wearing 15 at practice. Am I missing a receiver somewhere?

Vincent Perry.
Freshman from Hillsboro. Was teammates with Kyle Phillips.
Really fast and smooth.

Thomas is struggling at Tackle

Looks the same as last year but otoh he was going up against one of the best DE's in CFB.

O line looks pretty awful

A couple of things:

First, the OLine didn't look that bad. I started breaking down and scoring the reps from this film, but gave up when it became too difficult to figure out who the players were because of poor video quality, shots blocked by other spectators, etc. At the point where I stopped, I'd scored 3 wins for the DLine, 2 for the OLine, and 1 rep that was a draw. Yes, Coleman got beat in one rep, and Charles Mosley got beat in another, but those were just two reps out of several. Taken as a whole, it was not overwhelmingly tilted in favor of either side.

Second, in the clips above, we saw one or two reps per player. Yesterday evening, Coach Jones mentioned that some of these players have been through 300-400 reps so far in fall camp (he was talking about WRs at the time, but you can run a Line rep about as quickly as a QB-WR pass rep, so they should be comparable). Point is, we shouldn't think we know much at all about how these players are doing based off the grand total of 5-10 reps we've seen each of them run. It's a drop in the bucket to what the coaches are seeing.

I'm following the OLine's development this fall as closely as anyone else here in VN, but we shouldn't make the mistake of thinking that we can see enough to determine how well or poorly things are going. We're just gonna have to depend on the coaches' assessments for that...and see how it works out when we actually start playing games.

One thing's for sure: thanks to practicing against such a talented DLine, our OLine--Coleman, Jashon, Jack, Mack, Brett, Kerby, and all the rest--are going to be far better in September than they would've been otherwise. That's the primary reason I have hope for something good in 2015.

Go Vols!

Nobody was worried about the offensive line when we closed out the season at 4-1 with Dobbs under center. He makes a difference.

*The 4 wins came against teams with an average W/L record of 5-7.

fyp

I am going to add the elephant-in-the-room disclaimer any time I see that stat.

The offense looked and functioned completely different with Dobbs under center, that's the point I was making and if you can't see and acknowledge that then I can't help you.
