Depending on who you believe, it's been reported that On3 didn't get info from UT staff.

Danny White and Heupel sourced the story.
Schools try all the time and totally fail to get in front of a player story.
UT did something very rare here.

It does appear now that Nico’s team was gonna go to the portal anyway so UT did probably draw this to a head Friday instead of Sat or Monday. I don’t for one second believe his agent went rogue. Nic knows & controls everything & really screwed up big time now.

But you are right. I don’t understand how anyone walks away from $2.5 mil. If Nic was gonna pull this stunt, he should have had Nico the first QB in the portal immediately after the regular season. That’s when the most teams were looking for QBs & the most NIL $ was available. A lot of teams might want Nico but they’ve already spent their money on other guys by now.
