They knew Dobbs had potential, but wanted to preserve a year of his eligibility. Simple as that.
I think there are a few reasons.
1. Lots of young, new starters on the offensive side of the ball; Butch probably wanted some senior leadership on the field, and say what you want about Worley, he isn't a bad leader.
2. I am sure the coaches knew how bad the OL would be. Putting an inexperienced QB back there early on would have a good chance to get him hurt and/or so severely rattled that he's mentally shaken for a while.
3. We don't see practice, and it's very, very likely something was missing from Dobbs' game all year. Bama and last night could really have been the coming out party.
