First, USC had five defensive players that went in the year prior's draft. Three ofthose went in the first round. Their defense took a huge hit. He was a first year DC that has proven himself in the USC program for many years(started when he was only 25!) Considering the situation, he did very well. Oh, and also, when you mention the PAC-10 and defenses, please note that it's very relative. PAC-10 offenses could do that to most temas in the nation.
