Once and For All: The Fulmer Debate Ends Here

Should Phillip Fulmer Have Been Fired?

Anarchy erupts. Coach Fulmer molded and held on to staff. The ones that moved on, did so at his recommendation. There is no loyalty to this new bunch of coaches.
Fulmer personally put this program behind the 8-ball by himself. The Fulmer tree of coaches is short and for good reason.

I only post when something needs to be said.

Absolutely nobody wants Fulmer coaching their program. One of the top programs in the country has expressed an interest in our DC (which is a compliment).

How is it that we should still want Fulmer as our Coach?

If Fulmer's legend was so great and our ousting him such an egregious mistake, I would think he would have been scooped up by some other fortunate school by now like Virginia, Louisville, Minnesota, Vanderbilt...

I think Dooley is a good coach and a better guy. I like Wilcox and Chaney. I just think there was more stability when we had more Tennessee guys on the staff. I am glad Chuck Smith is on board. I would like to see guys like Dale Jones, Marion Hobby, T Martin and Kevin Steele on staff. They wouldn't look at their jobs as stepping stones.

Ironic; since you started this whiny thread about coaches leaving and the only way to get these coaches is if the current staff leaves.

? If Tee Martin wanted to eventually be a OC, and one day a HC, and none of those spots opened at UT, would you discourage him from going to NC State to take a promotion?

Or any of the other ex Vols that would be on the staff?

They probably wouldn't leave after one year. I know the jobs open up at this time, but we have a bowl game coming up and are in the middle of recruiting. We don't need this instability.

I hope you are not talking about who can not find a job?

The only thing legendary about him over the last 10 years was loses to Vandy and Wyoming.

I'm longing for the days when we knew guys like Larry Slade, Pat Washington, Kurt Roper, and Greg Adkins weren't going to be scooped up by other top level BCS programs. We need to get back to having crappy coaches nobody any good wants. It's not about quality, it's about stability.

Can't have the cake and eat it too.

If you employee top assistants (which you have to do to win) you are gonna lose em at some point. If your doing that, capable replacements are not hard to find.

So you are saying it was just Fulmer that sucked. I guess his current coaching status, compared to his assistants who were able to find coaching jobs, bears you out. Glad to see we could finally agree on something.

No one will equal Fulmer's achievements at UT in the next decade or two or three. Just let me know when we have a five year span over the next decade that merely equals Fulmer's worst five year span in his time on the hill.

Yeah, nobody ever wanted Trooper Taylor or Rodney Garner or Latrell Scott as a recruiter; nobody ever wanted Cutcliffe or Chief as a coordinator; and nobody wanted Mike Barry or Doug Marrone as an offensive position coach or Dan Brooks or Chief as a defensive position coach.

Welcome to Tennessee fandom -- if you stay here as a coach, you must suck.

You listed Chief twice, chief. And Johnny Majors Chavis and Cutcliffe to Tennessee.

That one year we got out of Marrone sure was great. Replacing him with Adkins, too. What a homerun. And Mike Barry was followed up with Jimmy Ray Stephens and then an even crappier TE coach. Wish I could get me some more of that stability.

And yeah, nobody ever did want Latrell Scott, who was a pretty miserable failure at UT.

It will probably be before Fulmer finds anyone who will hire him as a coach.
