On to Atlanta for Exciting Vols Bowl (Georgia Tech students robbed at gunpoint)

Same thing happened to a friend of mine while I was at UT. Same stuff happens everywhere. I've lived here 15 years and never felt threatened once. That brutal carjacking double murder in Knoxville a few years ago is worse than anything that's happened in Atlanta since I've lived here.

Oh no, I'm not comparing the two. Just sharing a story.

Georgia Tech students robbed at gunpoint | ajc.com

Two Georgia Tech students were robbed at gunpoint Saturday evening, according to campus police.
The students were walking on North Avenue near Spring Street when they were approached by a large, tan sedan, according to Tech police. A man exited the vehicle and pulled out a black revolver.
The man got both of the victims' wallets before leaving the scene on foot, police said.
One of the robbery victims sustained a minor injury in the incident.

You obviously haven't been on the UT campus much. There are police alerts for robberies in Fort Sanders posted all the time in the 11th street garage. This isn't big news. It happens. At least they weren't killed and raped by a group of worthless animals like what happened in Knoxville a couple of years ago.

People act like Atlanta is Detroit . . . and it's just not.

I've lived there, gone to school there, ridden MARTA and been to tons of games at Turner Field, the GA Dome, Phillips Arena/Omni and I've never felt slightly threatened.

I live in ATL as well and can attest to this.

Had a friend when I was at Tech get his car stolen right off the street in broad daylight on Tech's campus. Car was locked, the guy just busted the window and hot wired it. I just don't know what you do with that.

Had my car stolen in Knoxville from my apartment parking lot.

Atlanta is no different than any other city, just stay alert and don't act like an easy target.

Stay home if you're scared. We don't need hillbillies who are afraid of the big bad city wandering around here anyway.
they are the ones that say 'ohhhhhh i need off here! and then cut across 8 lanes of traffic on the connector(75/85 for those that don't know)

Thank you. I posted something similar the other day and got blasted for it.

I don't think Nuke/Richardson jokes are appropriate here.

These robbers were professionals who stole wallets and money from people who appeared to have them. They were not targeting rednecks with hamburgers. So, I don't get the analogy.

It's almost as if the Fort Sanders area doesn't exist! :eek:lol:

I lived in the Fort during Spring 2008 (semester when it seemed like everyone got robbed):
My neighbor got shot
my other neighbor got chased by a homeless with an ice pick
my friend's car got broken into
the cops searched around, under, and a little inside of my house for a robber who they thought hid somewhere around my house.
a kid got robbed outside of my house
my friends house got broken into.
my other friend got robbed at gunpoint in his own bed

That same semester they had those dudes who got in a fight in the library or the UC and were running around campus with a gun...

PS - since that semester things have gotten a lot safer around the Fort. The cops cracked down super hard last Fall and Spring and since then things have gotten better. You certainly don't hear about people getting robbed or anything nearly as much as you used to.

Not trying to scare people or anything lol. I'm just saying, I can't imagine Atlanta being any worse for 1 weekend. Especially around New Years.

Plus my aunt and uncle live in Atlanta and I've been visiting East Atlanta every other year since I was a kid. It's always been fun and harmless. Atlanta is a very exciting, clean, and organized place. It's like a larger Charlotte or Nashville.

Just don't drive in the afternoon and you're all good.

Atlanta is filled with thugs and ton of homeless. Don't go walking around there at night alone. Too many robberies and the police there are worthless.

Absolutely right. If I see any of you out of town folks walking around here, I'll jack you up and lift your wallets my damn self. Nothing personal, that's just the way we roll down here.
