I was watching part of a replay of the Oklahoms game last night and I noticed that on Hurds fumble then recovery on the 1st play after TKjrs interception on the 29 yard line:
The play was a Hurd running play to the right. The right side of the line blocked well and this would hv been a big gain. There was a Blitz coming from the left end of the line.
The problem was the left tackle tried to block someone and whiffed, so that player was free to run in. But in front of that guy was another player who ran right past our left guard, unblocked. Our left guard didn't even try to block him! He was so confused he ran by him then was looking around for someone to block but there was no one there!
Then our center got beat by the player he was blocking and another guy blitzing from the left ran in too...So, 4 players ran into our backfield from the left side of our Oline.
If they hold those first 3 guys, the guys they were supposed to block, then I doubt the blitzing guy would've caught Hurd and he might've been off to the races.
Either way, we don't lose any yards and should hv at least been able to get a field goal attempt outta that series, which probably would hv sealed the game.
So once again, Oline is still a huge issue that will hold this team down. Many times they couldn't even block the guys standing right in front of them, much less pick up any sort of blitz.
I do agree that Butch should hv noticed that they started blitzing almost every down at he end of the 3rd and beginning of the 4th quarter... I mean, Oklahoma was desperate and they were just really going for it.
However, this is not a champion Oline by any stretch either. If fact, those missed assignments on this one play might hv cost us the game.
