Ole Miss game info for 1st timer?

Everyone always told me that they redshirted Miss Americas in Oxford. After my first trip last year, that statement is 100% correct. I will be there wearing sunglasses again this year.

Unless you plan on getting your spot Fri. night, tailgating in the Grove itself isn't feasible as a visiting fan. Just make contact w some Ole Miss fans, either before or the day of, and someone will invite you over for a cocktail or three and a plate.

It costs more than a hotel room obviously, but best way to experience a game weekend is to rent a house or condo in walking distance of the Square. Cost can be mitigated by a group of people. If not, hotels in Tunica/DeSoto Co. MS are a popular choice.

A ton of UT fans came in '09, it was a good atmosphere and good time.

Bump for those headed down next week.

Group I'm going with is eyeing Jackson(TN) or somewhere like Collierville to stay.

Leading plan is to leave Knox early Saturday, get to hotel, drop luggage and clean up, then head to Oxford.

Thoughts?

I lived in Oxford for a while. Batesville, MS is the next closest town, and on the way to I-55. If you're headed the other way, you can try Tupelo, MS. Both of those towns have some food options and several decent hotels. After that the next closest real option is the Memphis area (this would include Olive Branch & Southaven). Memphis is about 1-1.5 hours from Oxford, and will have a room available for sure. You could also check out Beale St and have some amazing BBQ while you're there. But don't drive drunk to Memphis. You do not want to be pulled over by the MS police for any reason.

You want to tailgate in the Grove. There are no other (good) options, and it is truly a unique experience. However, I do recommend you go to the town square afterwards and get a meal/drink. I personally like Ajax and the Italian place (can't remember name). A lot of people also like Doe's Eat Place and City Grocery.

FWIW, the women are truly amazing to behold. Been to many games around the country and the South and Ole Miss takes the prize for beautiful women....just don't speak to any of them. :swoon3:

How, on earth, can you not thank them and tell them how much you appreciate being amongst such heavenly bodies?? Worked for me, my friends.

Saw us win there in 04 & lose in 09. Great time both games. Oxford is a place everyone should go to a game at least once. Nice people, beautiful girls, fancy tailgating. MSU must be so jealous of them! I stayed in Tupelo once & Memphis once. Neither is that far. Alabama, Florida & LSU fans should be required to take CLASS lessons from OM fans!

So true,vb81. I found them to be the epitomy of Southern, genteel cordiality. Hope it's still that way....

Seems like a bad plan. Jackson is only like 5 hrs drive from Knoxville....but probably 3 or more hours from oxford. be a pretty long drive after the game back to motel. The Tupelo, Olive Branch, Batesville options are much better..

And of course, you gain an hour coming our way too!

The attraction to Jackson was a free place to stay, but in talking to everyone tonight it sounds like Collierville is the winner for the moment.

I'm still trying to pitch the Mississippi cities.

Any idea how the drive from Knoxville is to Tupelo or Olive Branch? I can get time estimates, but we're trying to avoid easily clogged roads on the Saturday morning drive to the hotel.

I've been to Oxford three times. The Grove is tailgating at its finest. I've had a mixed experience with the fans, and I'm guessing that prosperity will instill a little "new-money" cockiness that might be ill-received by visitors.

The square has a number of cool, but small spots. Expect crowded bars and make sure you have a reservation for dinner. City Grocery is the place to eat, but I doubt you can get in there, at this point. There is another place across the square that is also really good (steaks, etc), but I don't recall the name.

If you don't have a room booked, forget about it, at this point. Collierville is a hike but a heck of a lot closer than Jackson. Last time I went, we stayed with friends in Savannah, TN/Pickwick.

The drive is pretty easy if you go through Birmingham, AL, but it is 30 minutes longer (7:30-8 hours) and a good 50-70 miles longer too. I got to the point that I always went through Nashville and cut down through Jackson, TN. Once you go through Jackson, it becomes two lane highways, so you might get behind some pokies, but it's a shorter drive and only takes about 7-7:30hours.

These times are all to Oxford, mind you, because that's where I live. Tupelo is 45-60 minutes east of here & Olive Branch is about one hour & 15 minutes away.

The restaurant you're looking for is Bouré, which is excellent. There are MANY fantastic food options in Oxford.

- Handy Andy Grocery is a hole in the way place, but has some great BBQ & burgers.
- Big Bad Breakfast is a must if you can get in there in the mornings.
- Snackbar is great, but you have to get a little dressy to go there. They have everything from fine cuisine to burgers & truffle fries.
- Ajax is well-known and good old southern cooking.
- Lamar Lounge has one of the best burgers in town & love their fries. They're under the City Grocery umbrella along with Snackbar (J. Currency owns them all).
- The Rib Cage has some pretty good BBQ.
- Soulshine Pizza is a regional chain (only four locations) and quite good for pizza and a few other dishes.

So yeah, you have some options. Should be a fun (and awkward for me) weekend. Look forward to seeing my alma mater play and seeing that fantastic sea of orange.

Jackson is right at 2 hours from Oxford. (It's where I live) I'd definitely stay in Mississippi if I were you, especially if you plan on drinking.

Well, the wives all washed out of the trip a few weeks ago, so now it's more of a drive down, go to the game, sleep a few hours, drive back type of trip. Minimal partying type stuff.

We've all done the Knoxville to Johnson City post-game trip numerous times so a drive before/after the game isn't a huge issue.

My brother and I will be making our first trip to Oxford as well. Staying in tupelo and willing to contribute beer to any Vol tailgate.

Jackson is only a 100 miles from Oxford, not ideal but not horrible either.

So...lodging is taken care of.

Any clue about parking?

If you get there early enough, probably before 1pm CST you may get lucky with a spot along the Square which is a little over a mile walk from campus.

A forewarning to anybody going and planning on parking around the Square

Do not park in any type of illegal way that blocks an entrance to a business or blocks others. I paid and was told by the attendant to park along side the entrance to the Bancorp South and was towed by the bank during the Memphis game due to blocking the entrance. Had to walk 2.5 mi up road and pay $125 to get my truck back from a local towing business. Was not a fun night at all. Luckily the church overseeing the bank lot took responsibility and reimbursed the tow bill. But it was still a long night. So beware of how you park even if you pay and are told to park a certain way.
