The attraction to Jackson was a free place to stay, but in talking to everyone tonight it sounds like Collierville is the winner for the moment.
I'm still trying to pitch the Mississippi cities.
Any idea how the drive from Knoxville is to Tupelo or Olive Branch? I can get time estimates, but we're trying to avoid easily clogged roads on the Saturday morning drive to the hotel.
The drive is pretty easy if you go through Birmingham, AL, but it is 30 minutes longer (7:30-8 hours) and a good 50-70 miles longer too. I got to the point that I always went through Nashville and cut down through Jackson, TN. Once you go through Jackson, it becomes two lane highways, so you might get behind some pokies, but it's a shorter drive and only takes about 7-7:30hours.
These times are all to Oxford, mind you, because that's where I live. Tupelo is 45-60 minutes east of here & Olive Branch is about one hour & 15 minutes away.
I've been to Oxford three times. The Grove is tailgating at its finest. I've had a mixed experience with the fans, and I'm guessing that prosperity will instill a little "new-money" cockiness that might be ill-received by visitors.
The square has a number of cool, but small spots. Expect crowded bars and make sure you have a reservation for dinner. City Grocery is the place to eat, but I doubt you can get in there, at this point. There is another place across the square that is also really good (steaks, etc), but I don't recall the name.
If you don't have a room booked, forget about it, at this point. Collierville is a hike but a heck of a lot closer than Jackson. Last time I went, we stayed with friends in Savannah, TN/Pickwick.
The restaurant you're looking for is Bouré, which is excellent. There are MANY fantastic food options in Oxford.
- Handy Andy Grocery is a hole in the way place, but has some great BBQ & burgers.
- Big Bad Breakfast is a must if you can get in there in the mornings.
- Snackbar is great, but you have to get a little dressy to go there. They have everything from fine cuisine to burgers & truffle fries.
- Ajax is well-known and good old southern cooking.
- Lamar Lounge has one of the best burgers in town & love their fries. They're under the City Grocery umbrella along with Snackbar (J. Currency owns them all).
- The Rib Cage has some pretty good BBQ.
- Soulshine Pizza is a regional chain (only four locations) and quite good for pizza and a few other dishes.
So yeah, you have some options. Should be a fun (and awkward for me) weekend. Look forward to seeing my alma mater play and seeing that fantastic sea of orange.
