Automatic qualifiers should go away entirely, switch to using the BCS for the rankings and whatever the top 16 teams are get an invite. It shouldn’t matter if you win a conference championship. The BCS wasn’t a big problem, it’s that you only allowed 2 teams to play for a national championship whenever there are well over 100 division 1 football programs. The math just never added up.

It is, reminds me of grass cutter football when I was 8 or 9 years old. We didn't kickoff or punt, the coaches would just move the ball as if we had.
