OldTimer’s Dugout - Off Topic Thread

Warriors are just too experienced and was quite literally the absolute worst first round matchup anyone could get. Houston probably would have beaten any of the other lower seeded teams but they drew the short straw unfortunately.

What does make sense is that the Orioles pitching is historically bad. My offensively challenged Cincinnati Reds scored 24 in one game against them
As bad as their pitching has been, the Marlins have been worse. Marlins have allowed 16 earned runs more than the Orioles and exactly 100 earned runs more than the MLB-leading Padres.

Braves are now a combined 1-9 vs the Padres and Dodgers on the season. 14-9 vs the rest of the league. Might very well sneak up and snag a wildcard spot by the end of the year but they have shown nothing to inspire confidence in winning a postseason series.

I bet the game thread was full of NegaVols and their hot takes. Here’s the deal…this was a reloading year. It’s impossible to have a top 5 team every year. This is a very good/top 15 team but not elite. TN lost 7 of 9 position players and all of their starting pitching and most of their key relievers. Thank goodness for CTV recruiting Ensley to return, but this is an inexperienced, young baseball team. They could still make a postseason run but let’s enjoy them for what they are, and stop comparing them to the NC team.

Another thing…NIL and the Transfer Portal have brought increased parity to college baseball—particularly the historical top baseball leagues (see SEC and ACC). They’ve taken a lot of top players from lower level conferences and directional schools and made the rich even richer. The Sonny DiChiara’s and Chase Dollander’s aren‘t staying at Samford or GA Southern anymore. Historically mediocre teams like GA and KY now leverage the portal to completely revamp their rosters with proven college talent (vs recruiting and developing high school talent) and become competitive practically overnight.
CTV and staff are adept at identifying, recruiting, and developing elite high school talent (and then supplementing gaps via portal). However, lesser coaches can simply “pick and bid” via the portal to catch up. I will take CTV’s skills and method every day of the week. Just don’t expect a top 5 program every year—it’s not reasonable.

Reduced roster sizes will likely mean more parity.

Great point. Fall rosters at 38 and season rosters at 34 next year will mean no more stockpiling HS talent, and I assume less redshirts. Or will NIL be used as a loophole to keep an additional 10 to 12 fully funded “Redshirts”?

Michigan HC only suspended 2 games by the university for his involvement in the signing of stealing scandal. And get this, Michigan chose Weeks 3 and 4 as the games to be suspended 🤣

NCAA can still punish on top of that if they choose, which I fully expect them to after pulling this stunt. I expect him to be suspended closer to the 4-6 game range whenever it’s all said and done.
