Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy interviewed by Currie

He's in a conference dominated by offense and doesn't get elite Defensive players. But he could here and could hire a great DC.

Yes, and the defensive coordinator will be going to his death. There is nothing practice against, your defense has nothing to practice against. You could hire Buddy Ryan from his grave to be the DC at Texas A&M and it isn't going to matter.

Powder puff football, looks great until you hit defenses in the top20-30 or so.

How about this slow rolls in front of the team and Gundy during the Vol Walk...

Smokey’s& The Bandits!

👍👍👍

At 8.4M a year he will not get this convenience. The normal board sharks will be circling day 1.

You are more than likely correct but IMO it is different in the SEC than the Pac 12 and there will be a learning curve required. IF (big if) he comes he needs to find a DC with SEC experience.

Time to bring Jim Bob Cooter home!

Would you have him a.) Leave the Lions now, even though they are alive for the playoffs b.) Leave after they are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs? c.) Leave at the end of the NFL season

He is a good offensive mind, I believe, and seems to have done good things with Stafford and the offense.

Has anyone put out any feelers to gauge interest?

Oklahoma at least attempts to run some power football, but I would say their success is a mixed bag... that probably wouldn't work in the SEC W season in and season out, but they are not as bad as Ok. State, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Baylor, Oregon, West Virginia, etc.

That will have greater chance of success in the SEC East, its a no go in the SEC West.

To be honest, I hate to even watch that kind of football or whatever it is... but each his own.

Might work to an extent in the East, I would just have hired the Missouri coach... same stupid stuff.... would be much cheaper.

I hear ya and to some extent agree. I do know this: it's been a spread O with a QB smart enough to make good decisions and have a good arm that has beaten Bama (Trevor Knight) and another QB from the Big 12 (Stidman @ Auburn now). Gus' gimmicky O seems to fare well in games like Bama. Hire a solid D coordinator and the vols will do wonders IMHO.

He will be able to "Rock that Mullet" with a Coon Skin Hat!

Plus he won't have to throw away his Orange Pants!

He'd better get Kevin Steele or equivalent (Schiano) to shore up his notoriously bad defenses.

Oh and the deal is off if his OC isn't part of the package.

This minus the Schiano part. I was just telling my buddy if we're going to spend big money on Gundy, let's do what it takes to get Steele here as DC.

Kevin Steele may very well be available if Malzahn bolts for another team. Auburn is nasty on defense this year. Steele may not be a head coach but the man knows how to get it done on defense in the SEC. I say double his salary too. Gundy is bringing his OC and with Steele as DC we could challenge Bama in a year or too. A lot of folks consider what Gundy has done at OSU as his ceiling but our resources and tradition and and fanbase will put this guy over the top. Some of you may not agree but I don't really believe Nick Saban is some type of X's and O's genius but somehow the marriage between him and Alabama became sensational. And I'll never understand this but the best athletes all want to play for him. I can understand the success being attractive but what I'm trying to say is that sometimes it's the match between coach and program that becomes magical. I mean Bruce Pearl is a good basketball coach but the pairing of him and our basketball team took on it's own momentum. Hope we can catch a little lightning in a bottle and unleash next fall on Saturday.

Uh,better check his past as defense cord. And head coach, ie. fired at Clemson after giving up 70, 70 in Orange bowl against West Virginia. Also defense was pitiful during his tenure as head coach at Baylor. Lsu wanted rid of him last year. Yes he is probably a good coach and maybe shoop is too. Depends on jimmies and joes fitting your system. Others on this board disqualify coaches on one or two seasons or worse one game. Wrong headed imo. I’d take him but his star is bright and he’s going to get paid$.

That's not really the reason why teams score so much out there. 1.) they don't really care, 2.) even if they cared, all they have to scrimmage against is a flag football offense

It will work better in the SEC East, its a no go against the SEC West, generally speaking.

Yeah you're right. People in OK and TX really don't pay attention to football at all, much less care about it.

What's a mullet

The mullet, aka Kentucky waterfall, Tennessee top hat, the number 7, the LPGA, camaro cut, and Mississippi mud flap, is a hair style popularized in the 80s. It is a style where you keep the top short and business like while growing it out in the back. It's considered to be a "redneck" look.

The spread has very little to do with it, you have to still play smash mouth football... that is what Ohio State does and that is what Mullen does... at the end of the day... power running, and stopping the power run... if you can't do those things... you probably won't be in the picture in the SEC W... and probably limited success in the East although a greater chance of success.

Hiring a great defensive coordinator has no bearing, as its the offense that is problem... nothing to practice against.

We're in for more trouble than hiring Schiano if they throw 8.4 mil at Gundy and give him some obtusely low allowance for staff.

Here is the win/win. Have him bring Steele in as DC, who has had a hand in beating two number one teams this year as Auburn's DC. If Gundy fails you have a legit HC in your DC to move right up and bring in Tee as OC. Can't lose.

Huh? tOSU that only scored 16 against Oklahoma. That smash-mouth football?? You may want to inform Gundy of this if he's hired because as I posted before, he waxed Richt and Mullen. Also note the Big 12 gave up fewer yards in bowl games than any other conf. Speking of defense, how many teams in the SEC-W has explosive abilities to score quickly? You're right, to each their own. I like races to see who can reach 100 first then the old "3 yards and cloud of dust" stuff.
