If you like wine, it's hard to beat Napa and surrounding valleys (e.g. Alexander and Russian River) for getting to visit many quality wineries in one general area. Those are only like an hour drive away from Berkeley. Also, Mt. Tamalpais State Park just north of San Francisco is really nice with goods views of the the ocean and San Francisco. Also, Muir Woods is right there as well. There really are many really nice places to visit within an hour of Berkeley/San Francisco.
personally i like the russian river a lot more than napa. people are a lot more laid back, the wine is cheaper, and they actually have free tastings.
I am heading out to San Francisco for the Labor Day weekend show. Staying at the Sir Francis Drake. I encourage all Vol fans to make the trip. The Bay Area is one of America's true treasures.
