Offsides Penalty on 1st Onside Kick (Pic)

Where was the offsides though. None of the screen shots show anyone offsides and someone already posted the rule on it. According to the rule they couldn't of called it on Medley. So where?

The only possible thing that could have been called was that JRM's hand was extended beyond the line when Medley kicked the ball. His feet were behind the line but I believe the rule is "any part of the player's body" cannot cross the line. If that's what it was... then that's a tough call.

My question is how can a ref blow such an important call at such a crucial point in the game? Clearly, no one was off sides.

Medley came down the line to kick the ball, and went completely offsides before coming even with the ball and kicking it. His kicking foot went offsides while not in the act of kicking.

I just rewatched it 10x, that has to be what they called. Maybin "might" have crossed the line with his helmet, but from the angle there's no way to tell.

It's pretty bad. I mean can't really say they cost us the game. We didn't exactly play like world beaters. But down 8. 3 timeouts remaining they at least cost of the chance to determine it on the field.

Nope.. It was JRM that got flagged.

Interesting about Medley crossing the line while not in the act of kicking. I need to watch it again and see about that.

He can be, if his plant foot crosses, that's ok. If his whole body does, he's offsides.

His whole body crossed before he corrected his allignment prior to the kick

Ok will have to look that up then what I saw didn't specify.

But the call was not on Medley. It was on JRM so thats moot. Guess you can say they technically got the call right and just called it on the wrong guy.

CBJ said that he was told it was JRM.

Yep that's all I can find too. Makes no mention of how much of the kickers body is behind it. Guess it doesn't matter if they called it on JRM tho

I thought CBJ said he needed to look at it, because Maybin said there was no way he was offsides. I never heard the refs say who it was on

Why would JRM have just randomly said that it wasn't him?

Correct. In my best officials voice: "We have offsides on the kicking team. That penalty is declined. The kicking team illegally touched the ball prior to traveling 10 yards. The receiving team has first and 10 at that point."

Not too hard for any referee to say, because they all would in that situation - except for this one.

Am I the only one who actually heard the ref say that? I heard it plain as day. He clearly said the penalty was declined and Mizzou would have the ball at the spot. Then he said the play was under review.

@DavidClimer: Just saw a tape (not a still shot) and the call appears to be against Medley for crossing the line, correcting and then kicking ball.

A kicker cannot be called offsides PERIOD...

The kicker can't be offsides on the kick, in this case he went offsides before attempting the kick.

So, in your mind, the kicker can run down to the endzone, lay down and make a grass angel, run back across the line, and kick the ball... Think about what you're saying
