Official OC search update thread...

I love Butch Jones but that doesn't mean he is perfect. He has his weaknesses and hiring good assistants could be one of them. If he hires Debord and we see no offensive improvement, than it will be an idiotic move.

However if Debord comes in and we see offensive improvement, then it will be I who looks like the idiot. We shall see.

"Could" "if"

It's a bad sign for a coach hiring only those within his immediate "family". Good coaches seek out a variety of perspectives and ideas, getting fresh blood into the program.

It won't take that.

So if it is Debord the only "good" reason for waiting is that he knows it would have a negative effect on the recruiting class. If thats true then CBJ will make himself look very bad to some parents and even HS coaches. Theres no way he is waiting to announce the hire to the media but is being honest with all the recruits, their parents and their coaches. If he was being honest with them and already told them and they are ok with it then there is NO good reason not to just go out and make it official to the rest of the world.

I just wonder what CBJ does if Preston Williams waits to sign until he sees who the OC hire is. Does CBJ just announce it and accept that hiring his buddy cost him a top recruit or does he dump the idea of only hiring previous CMU coaches/players and finally start an actual coaching search.

The reason for waiting could just as likely be because there are more offensive coaches with a foot out the door, but they're sticking around to help seal the deal on NSD. Could also explain why the CMU HC hire seems to be on hold. Could be a lot more shuffling yet to come on the offensive staff.

There is nothing we've learned that suggests anyone other than Mike DeBord is the frontrunner for the Vols' offensive coordinator position, likely to be introduced by Wednesday and potentially participating in the recruiting celebrations in Knoxville, Nashville and Memphis.

Meanwhile, the Vols are adding some support staff pieces as we move forward, while it's expected that some others will find landing spots elsewhere after using up their two-year stints in Knoxville.

Tennessee has hired former Michigan standout Kevin Koger in a support/intern/GA role for the football team. Koger is in Knoxville today.

Additionally, the Vols are moving to add Jordan Luallen into the mix as well. Luallen played under Butch Jones at Cincinnati, with Grant Ramey dropping the knowledge on me that Luallen was a four-star QB coming out of high school who signed with Georgia Tech and then transferred to Cincy. Luallen most recently has been with the Washington Redskins but also is in the Knoxville area.

Looks like this one is over with for better or worse. Just trust the coach at least until we see the product on the field. I'm honestly not sure that Debord isn't a better choice over Sanford. Everyone thinks the young flashy guy is the one to go with but a lot of the time that just doesn't work out. Brent Pease was a bust for UF and he had more experience than Sanford.

Oh the good ole "buddy" system. Don't think this one will end well at all for Butch but time will tell. Definitely question Butch going forward with how this has been handled and the ignorance of these hires.

I still get a vibe from my energy ball of goodness that JEFF QUINN is actually going to be our OC and these new guys are actually in talks with the new CMU coach who will actually be Coach Z, Elder, or Mahony or maybe all 3 of them...who knows. If it's Elder, than DeBord will take over as TE/Special Teams.

I just can't wrap my head the reasoning why DeBord is given another shot as OC.

Right, If. I have no idea who the OC will be.

At this point, we appear to be keeping most of our commits without yet announcing an OC (minus Bussey, but I don't think that had anything to do with our OC). So why risk losing recruit(s) over an OC hire? Unless the OC is a splash hire that could bring additional recruits, why risk it. Specifically, in the case of Debord, he certainly wouldn't be bringing any recruits with him. But at this point, It's too late for any hire to help us in any.

TL;DR It's too late in the game for the announcement to really help, it could only hurt.

I don't disagree with you. I'll be shocked if it's anyone other than DeBord.

I don't think Jones would have even interviewed anyone else without external pressure. Which other candidates(assuming the rumors were true and he actually talked to anyone else) were flown into Knoxville to meet with players?

I don't worry too much about this recruiting cycle.

There are like 10-11 on campus and another 8-10 that are defense or special teams currently committed.

Most of the current class won't be influenced by the OC hire directly relating to their commitment IMO.

What happens next couple of seasons with the play calling and offense may make or break Jones' tenure at UT however.

For the Debord homers, you're right. Of course if Debord doesn't work out, you can just wuss out and agree it was a bad hire because you're too chicken to take a stance. Kudos.

This is the kind of thing that does annoy me.
Because some are honest enough to admit they have no qualifications to decide the OC, they are "chicken".

It is far more likely that you just can't stand people not jumping on board with your strong held kneejerk belief. Outside of a few in the SEC, I haven't watched enough OC action to judge any of them.

The sad part is you are actually making fun of others for not pretending like they already know the outcome.

I don't post much, but I read though this stuff every day. It really does not matter who we hire as the OC IMO, We will be running the same offense, WE HAVE THE TALENT TO COMPETE....If CBJ wants to hire a old friend fine by me, We will win no matter who is hire as OC. I am just an old farmer but I could coach the AFC or NFC pro bowl teams, not saying we are an NFL team but we have as much if not more talent than anyone in the EAST. Talent wins more often than not. Everybody relax, enjoy the ride it really is not going to matter!

I had to give you a like for this. By the way, I am not sure that he totally understood my "it won't take that" comment.

It's called reserving judgment until we see the results. You should try it some time--both with the OC hire and your fellow VN members.

May have already been discussed, but has anyone noticed that Mike Debord's twitter handle is @UT_MikeDebord???

This my understanding. Butch is waiting after NSD not because of UT but because of the team the next OC is currentlg employed by.
