Official Major League Soccer/US Men's National Team Thread

Yeah. I said Shea sucked a big one but I'll have to retract that considering he has 2 game winning goals.

Wasn't a great game by him, and the ball was already gonna go in.

That said, he's still a decent squad player right now when he applies himself, and with a lot of upside

Klinsman describes Stu's injury as very serious. I know they are saying sprained right knee, but I know when I tore my acl the trainer called it a sprain until the MRI

I'm not really sure where you see such a high ceiling, I really can't see Shea amounting to much at all either internationally or professionally.

only caught the 2nd half but it was a good win. For some reason it doesn't look like we have many out there with the confidence to crack one from 18-25yds out. Really need to finish better around the goal. Can't leave too many chances hanging around against better competition

It was mostly our b team. If Dempsey and Altidore had been out there, it would have been 4-0.

I get that (Dempsey's never met a shot he didn't like) but would think someone else would hit a couple. Also a couple of the finishes were from guys who should do better (Donovan and Johnson).

Felt like EJ was getting frustrated that he couldn't find space, and I don't think he was expecting that ball from Shea to get to him. Regardless, I'm still amazed he wasn't able to finish that shot.

Donovan's missed header looked like he thought he was inside the near post and just kind of lost his position on the field.

Looks like there are several young dual-nationals looking at the USMNT. The previously mentioned Aron Johannson, who Arsenal has been eyeing. Currently a striker with Jozy Altidore's former squad, AZ Alkmaar.

John Anthony Brooks, a 20-year old defenseman who currently plays for Hertha Berlin, and has been called up for the friendly against Bosnia on August 14th.

Landon Donovan can be streaky with finishing, but he's consistently solid in the mid and all the way down the right wing with a solid defensive work ethic. Which is where, thankfully, he will be playing with the full strength squad.

Altidore at the top with Dempsey underneath and Wondo and EJ coming off the bench should be solid. Two athletic strikers with great pace, and two center forwards who can hold up play and distribute in the box. Exactly what's needed.

Stuart Holden is one snake bitten SOB, was hoping it wouldn't be as serious for him this time around.

how meaningful is this? ive not heard of the guy.

Young guy, only 22, and has been playing for the Iceland U-21 team. The US doesn't have a dedicated striker that can finish consistently. This kid could be that answer.

Plus, any player Arsenal is scouting is okay to play on the US team any day in my book.

Kyle Beckerman does his job
I know it’s not enough for some people, who continue to want the Real Salt Lake man to be more, do more, try more, etc.

But that positional discipline, that ability to win the ball, win tackles, distribute simply and wait for the next chance to do it all again … all that stuff is so critical in a match like Sunday’s, when less disciplined men might grow impatient and wander too far forward. That is exactly what Panama wanted, to defend and defend and hope to catch the United States leaning too far into the attack.

Teams need balance and Beckerman provides a bunch of it. No, he’s not about to displace Michael Bradley or even Jermaine Jones on coming World Cup qualifier rosters. But for depth in the pool, Beckerman as a holding midfield specialist provides essential value.

He's always been able to hold his own against MLS level competition, which is what he was up against in the GC. The problem for Beckerman has always been when he's tried to step up in competition to that next level, history hasn't been too kind to him there.

This has been a long-time coming. RFK is a freaking cavern.

DC United, city agree on stadium

DC United and city officials signed an agreement Thursday that would keep the Major League Soccer franchise in the District of Columbia with a new, $300 million soccer-only stadium.

The city and the team would split the cost of the stadium, which is tentatively scheduled to open in 2016 in an industrial section of southwest Washington known as Buzzard Point.

DC United, which has played in aging RFK Stadium since MLS' launch in 1996, had considered relocating to suburban Maryland, Virginia or even Baltimore. But co-owner Jason Levien said Thursday that he's been negotiating to keep the team in the district since he bought the club last year.
