Official Jon Gruden Thread XXVII

Which reinforces my belief that he has already been informed of his termination. If they were looking for any other excuse to pull the trigger, there have been more than enough the last 2 weeks to do that. Why they keep trotting him out there is the big mystery that everybody has their thoughts on.

He may have been informed, but as long as he wears the orange and stands on the sidelines, he is a representative of UT and that has a legal consequence. I'm baffled as well. Fire him publicly and get him out of Knoxville.

Currie will come out of this one of two ways:

1. The most incompetent AD we've ever had (Butch stays / hires google coach)

2. The best AD we've ever had (hires Gruden)

This is why I'm reserving judgement on Currie until we see the results of all this. I don't care what happens for the rest of this season if Gruden is on the sidelines in 2018.

This^^^^. I have said all along it wont be Gruden and I know some have said Im a negavol, etc. The information I get has told me Gruden was not in play because they are not going to give a coach control of the football program, thus no major coach will come and take the job if he is not allowed to control the program. Its not a money issue. BTW, this is the only way Saban took the Bama job and if you remember at 10pm he said he would not be the coach at Bama, then in the middle of the night hired is because they gave him the control he was asking for.

At this point our best bet would be Les Miles.

oh please no

John currie is a loser and a clown

I think we need to be more patient and allow Currie to do his job. I mean he just secured funding of $180 million for Neyland Stadium renovations. This does not paint the picture of a man willing to settle for mediocrity and the BOT must agree. I would love to have Gruden, but he may have his eyes on another coach and is waiting for the season to end to have formal discussions. Also, MNF doesn't end till Dec 25th and it just isn't logical for Gruden to abandon his post or announce anything mid-season. Saban wasn't announced until Jan 4th. Until Butch completely loses the locker room, he is still our best option for winning and to save face for the program. Based on what we have seen so far, I feel it will be after the season is over till anything major is announced. I know it's not what we want to hear, but patience my fellow Volunteers.

There is a lot of confusion in this thread, especially for newcomers. Ones who have been here a while can probably ignore this, but much of the confusion and contradicting information can be harmonized by understanding a few basic concepts regarding who has the authority to do what with respect to the university. The easiest way to explain this is to state what appears to have happened thus far:

A large faction of boosters (85%, lead by Ergen) want JG. At some point, this group contacted JG and reached an “agreement in principle” on what it would take for JG to take the job (i.e., if the university agrees to all of these things, JG agrees that he would take the job). This is the “done deal” that MIT refers to. However, this is not an actual agreement with the university, as the boosters lack the legal authority to enter into an agreement on behalf of the university. But there is a “done deal” in the sense that it is known what it will take to get JG. Thus the media report that the “university” has offered JG $10M; bad reporting, as the agreement in question was not likely offered by the university officially, but the “agreement in principle” with the boosters.

So, there is an “agreement in principal” with JG. However, the booster faction knows (based on the events of 2012) that the trick is getting the university to officially agree to the deal (because of resistance from the other 15% of boosters, including Haslam). Thus they put in place a series of incentives to induce the university and the 15% holdout boosters to agree, including withdrawal of booster money (by the 85%); venture capital for the academic side; inciting the fan base into a frenzy; something as yet unknown by PM; and presumably some other things of which we are not yet aware.

It would appear that we are now at the stage of getting the university to officially agree to the “agreement in principle” established between JG and the 85% booster faction. As anticipated, there is resistance. The university’s official representatives (Currie, backed by Haslam) balk at the “agreement in principle.” Certain media sources and/or “insiders” report that other candidates are under consideration, and that the JG deal is dead, or that no talks have ever been had with JG, etc. Those reports are true in the sense that the university (i.e., its official representatives) have had no part in the “agreement in principle” and have initially rejected it. Further, official university representatives have had no direct contract with Gruden. The same is likely true in 2012 and would explain why JG might say he was never contacted then – a true statement if it is recognized that he’s referring to official university representatives.

Essentially, if you consider who has the official capacity to do what, the picture can be largely clarified. It seems that we are currently at the stage where the 85% booster faction is applying their leverage to convince the university itself (i.e., official university representatives) to agree to the “agreement in principle” with JG. Until that either fails or succeeds, BJ will likely remain the head coach.

Well done.
Sums it up quite nicely...

Good morning everyone.

I've been in California the last few days working on a new book of business, but I've been somewhat following this.

I like all of the analysis done so far regarding the situation with Ergen and the Beaver. This lines up perfectly with what I had assumed. However, I'm not totally sold yet. Making the solid leap requires quite a bit of speculation. However, I do believe that the Beav is on the same side as Ergen, even if I'm undecided that he is working for him directly.

Here's the piece of the puzzle that i can't figure out, and perhaps its the piece of the puzzle that is confounding everyone and everything: What is Currie's interest in avoiding Gruden?

Totally ignoring Haslam for now, why would JC not be on board with JG? The easy answer is control, but no one can identify what "control" actually means in this context. Does Currie have concerns about tying his job to JG's success, and worries that he's not able to get it done? Is there a financial obligation we're unaware of? Does he have a desire for a different coach we haven't heard of yet? It's just a puzzle that I can't figure out.

Putting Haslam back into the equation, more scenarios emerge, but raise their own questions as well. It seems easy to say that Haslam may be against JG, but the only reason my be the aforementioned "control." Without knowing what that means, its pretty difficult to quantify possible objections.

Could it be that Currie and Haslam have a deal worked out from the hire? That has certainly been speculated, but that theory requires forming a belief about some pretty deep conspiracy. I generally avoid forming those types of beliefs, because they are often false. Powerful people know that conspiracy eventually bites them, and there would be enough criminal liability that they would want to avoid that if possible.

Does Haslam have a coach in mind? Is this truly a financial decision? What stake does Haslam really have in the University and the football program (how does he actually profit?).

Ultimately, if we are to believe the narrative, these questions are the crux of the issue. What possible interest could Currie have to oppose the JG hire (assuming the deal is structured as Beav has indicated)?

One possible alternative is that JC and the Haslam family is not actually obstructing the deal - but the negative press from the Beav, etc. belies that possibility (unless the argument is about timing and not objectives).

Anyways, I'm still optimistic for the narrative as presented. I'm choosing to believe, because I want to believe. We may all end up looking a fool, but that's a small price to pay for hope.

The Grude News, the midday edition. For those just tuning in.

OX0yQ.gif

Well, no news can be good news to an extent. Since his mega planet killing asteroid strike yesterday, Atlanta hasn't been very chatty. Not that we expected it as he's been trying to figure out which fork to use at the bigwig dinner last night and wants to know why he got three forks when he can just wipe off one with the tablecloth and continue eating. Emily Post probably ate up a lot of his bandwidth last night, hence, why he didn't post.

Regardless, between the time of his post and the meetings yesterday, something happened. Which we could assume was a good thing since the Neyland renovations went through without a hitch. You'd imagine some inner fighting if Currie was about to hire some no name Sun Belt coach and donations drying up. Not the case.

Swain seemed to be happy this morning. He's been full on Grude since this insanity started. Or as a minimum, a splash hire coach. Don't know if he knows something we don't, but it's like he hit the Mega Millions and $1B Powerball in the same week. I'll take that.

I'd say some of the news coming out of the meetings today could help clarify some stuff. Nothing specific, but could provide some nuggets to help tie things together.

We have determined an escape room turns into a "I really don't want to" escape room if Volly is trapped with Sam Elliott.

And we have entered the initial stages of the Great BBQ War of 2017. Sides are being picked and nobody will sit this one out. It's going to get medieval before it's over.

Duck continues to impress with his pragmatic thoughts and breakdown on the coaching search.

However, allegedly there was a stalemate this morning. No further information on that.

And somehow, we got onto a hairless cat pic spree. It got a little weird after that. Not that hairless cats aren't weird enough as it is.

Jimmy Hyams claims to have received copies of the resignation email sent by former VFL Coordinator Antone Davis. The emails claim he was subjected to “constant intimidation, bullying and mental abuse’’ from Jones. In another email to Currie: “I want you to know that I am not leaving Tennessee because I want to,’’ Davis wrote in the email. “I am leaving because I must. My biggest regret and fear is that I am leaving behind student-athletes and co-workers that may be subjected to the same treatment I have received.’’

Just wow if that's the case. Very telling to the state of the program.

In other news today, Freak was in negotiations with Boeing for an enhanced "sky yacht" 747 conversion for use to get to and from the Grude 1 yacht. When informed by Boeing engineers it would be impossible, potentially unwise and certainly unsafe for them to both put in a full lower deck hot tub, upper deck tailgating area and add luxury seating, Freak sent in Corporate Negotiator Preacher Webb who immediately started putting people "on the list" as well as Corporate Bouncer Ape who had choice words to say.

Engineers also stated it would be "impossible" for any 747 to land on the Grude 1 yacht as there is not enough landing space. Said "you're going to need a bigger boat." Freak's associates have been in contact with Newport News Shipbuilding to modify Grude 1 with a landing strip next to the franchised Waffle House and Krystal Burger.

This is the way the AD wants it to play out...wishful thinking. It ain't going to happen that way. The negatives far outweigh the positives; and it's getting more imbalanced daily.

I do not believe there are ten people left that actually believe Butch is our best option for success for the remainder of the season.

Well, you can take all the logic and intellectual fact gathering, and consider yourself OUT of the soon to be initiated Study to be done on this group. Arumph!

I'm fully in the Gruden camp for several reasons, the main one being a Tennessee connection. As tenuous as it is, he at least has some history to knowing who we are, what we were, and what we are supposed to be. He has family that is invested in this University. We have gotten away from that connection, and no longer know who we are. That's important to me. Add in his experience, and his name and you have an instant shot in the arm to a failing program.

There are others, who I am sure would be wildly successful here....those are the ones on my personal list. But JG, to me, is the only one that checks off the intangible boxes that will help bring back the greatness we have previously enjoyed.

We will likely have other opportunities in the future to infuse some Orange blood back into the program...but he seems to be the only one suited for today.

All in.
