Official Jon Gruden Thread XXVII

There is a lot of confusion in this thread, especially for newcomers. Ones who have been here a while can probably ignore this, but much of the confusion and contradicting information can be harmonized by understanding a few basic concepts regarding who has the authority to do what with respect to the university. The easiest way to explain this is to state what appears to have happened thus far:

A large faction of boosters (85%, lead by Ergen) want JG. At some point, this group contacted JG and reached an “agreement in principle” on what it would take for JG to take the job (i.e., if the university agrees to all of these things, JG agrees that he would take the job). This is the “done deal” that MIT refers to. However, this is not an actual agreement with the university, as the boosters lack the legal authority to enter into an agreement on behalf of the university. But there is a “done deal” in the sense that it is known what it will take to get JG. Thus the media report that the “university” has offered JG $10M; bad reporting, as the agreement in question was not likely offered by the university officially, but the “agreement in principle” with the boosters.

So, there is an “agreement in principal” with JG. However, the booster faction knows (based on the events of 2012) that the trick is getting the university to officially agree to the deal (because of resistance from the other 15% of boosters, including Haslam). Thus they put in place a series of incentives to induce the university and the 15% holdout boosters to agree, including withdrawal of booster money (by the 85%); venture capital for the academic side; inciting the fan base into a frenzy; something as yet unknown by PM; and presumably some other things of which we are not yet aware.

It would appear that we are now at the stage of getting the university to officially agree to the “agreement in principle” established between JG and the 85% booster faction. As anticipated, there is resistance. The university’s official representatives (Currie, backed by Haslam) balk at the “agreement in principle.” Certain media sources and/or “insiders” report that other candidates are under consideration, and that the JG deal is dead, or that no talks have ever been had with JG, etc. Those reports are true in the sense that the university (i.e., its official representatives) have had no part in the “agreement in principle” and have initially rejected it. Further, official university representatives have had no direct contract with Gruden. The same is likely true in 2012 and would explain why JG might say he was never contacted then – a true statement if it is recognized that he’s referring to official university representatives.

Essentially, if you consider who has the official capacity to do what, the picture can be largely clarified. It seems that we are currently at the stage where the 85% booster faction is applying their leverage to convince the university itself (i.e., official university representatives) to agree to the “agreement in principle” with JG. Until that either fails or succeeds, BJ will likely remain the head coach.

Very well stated and thorough.

Maybe MIT deleted his tweets cause there was some sort of agreement made during the meeting last night. Maybe he agreed to remove tweets disparaging Haslam/Currie since they all got on the same page finally?

SOON

I don't think Beaver was at the meeting. Just the people he works for.

i can't believe HR and or the university's legal counsel aren't demanding his removal. If what is said is true, between Davis and Kendrick's concussion, butch is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Which reinforces my belief that he has already been informed of his termination. If they were looking for any other excuse to pull the trigger, there have been more than enough the last 2 weeks to do that. Why they keep trotting him out there is the big mystery that everybody has their thoughts on.

The collective irrationality is stunning! These threads should be used to study human herd mentality.

Well....I don't know what to say....this is just....just....

AWESOME! We are going to be in a Study!!! YES! This is the validation we were looking for. Official Jon Gruden Thread XXVIII on the way.

He's coming....Soon!

I am going to reach out to my contacts and see if they know anything or have an opinion of what is going on.

They aren't UT contacts, but work at three other Power 5 schools.

Let me go full Fox Mulder with the tinfoil hat here on the Antone angle.

*Report comes out that Antone resigns his position.
*Hubbs reports there is no animosity per TOS. He simply has a private sector job lined up now.
*Email now comes out now blasting Jones and further fanning the flames.
*Beav previously stated the heat is going to be cranked up over the coming days.

So was there an opening at the Dish Network for Antone?

How is Butch still employed at our university? It's mind boggling.

Not only that, but leading the team onto the field at HOMECOMING. Way to rub the fans' noses in it even more, UT.

I don't know if Currie and his superiors would have the intestinal fortitude to remove Butch even if he was arrested for murder.

Everybody in the chain involved in the decision to trot Butch out there tomorrow should be fired.

I read all of these threads talking about the sh** storm at my beloved school and I have reached the point that all I feel is sadness. I'm past anger and disgust now. This is beyond anything I could have ever imagined.

This is what happens at an institution that had no "official" code of conduct for its employees prior to 2012 and hasn't substantively changed its student code of conduct since the 1970's. The whole UT system has been a story of cover ups, bribery and pay-offs for decades. But we still love her.

I don't want Frost, or any other young dynamic upstart. If UT was a young dynamic upstart that would be ok. We're not that. We are a blue-blood legacy SEC power, with facilities and funding to rival anyone in the country. We've moved away from seeing ourselves that way because of our self-inflicted decade of misery. It's time to change the perception in the same fashion that Alabama did.

I want an established, proven, championship level coach who will compete for championships against the best our conference has to offer. Who my list includes is irrelevant...but it doesn't include anybody at a current mid-major program, with less than 3 years of D1 experience, or who has started being spoken of because they are beating up on the scrubs at a non-P5 conference.

I still hold us to a higher standard than that....even if the powers that be don't seem to. I'll continue to, or I'll cease to care.

This^^^^. I have said all along it wont be Gruden and I know some have said Im a negavol, etc. The information I get has told me Gruden was not in play because they are not going to give a coach control of the football program, thus no major coach will come and take the job if he is not allowed to control the program. Its not a money issue. BTW, this is the only way Saban took the Bama job and if you remember at 10pm he said he would not be the coach at Bama, then in the middle of the night hired is because they gave him the control he was asking for.

At this point our best bet would be Les Miles.

You absolutely cannot intimidate an employee or create a hostile work environment that includes belittling someone in front of their peers. This is grounds for immediate termination in most companies. If Currie knew, and did nothing, then he should be removed as well.

Butch will just say "I didn't know, wouldn't purposely do anything to make a former player and VFL bad" and all will be well. Seems to be his MO.

Currie will hear Butch out and say, "ok, that's what I thought, thanks"........"see you Saturday, bestie"

The other action you'd expect in a situation like this is a suspension while an investigation is occurring. Since there are no signs of either an investigation or a suspension, I'm increasingly suspicious he's already been given a termination date or it is eminent. There would be no reason to suspend or investigate if termination is already determined.
