I'm fully in the Gruden camp for several reasons, the main one being a Tennessee connection. As tenuous as it is, he at least has some history to knowing who we are, what we were, and what we are supposed to be. He has family that is invested in this University. We have gotten away from that connection, and no longer know who we are. That's important to me. Add in his experience, and his name and you have an instant shot in the arm to a failing program.

There are others, who I am sure would be wildly successful here....those are the ones on my personal list. But JG, to me, is the only one that checks off the intangible boxes that will help bring back the greatness we have previously enjoyed.

We will likely have other opportunities in the future to infuse some Orange blood back into the program...but he seems to be the only one suited for today.

Boro, I agree 100%. IMO, JG has instant name recognition which would help getting recruits to pay attention. JG also studies football game film as a hobby, so he has a passion for breaking down film. With all his connections in the football profession, I would think that he can recruit top coaching talent as well. On top of everything that you have said, JG is the only option that I can get excited about.

Due to past history, everyone else would be an experiment in my eyes. This is my opinion and I'm entitled to keep it. GBO!

So my cousin who is a student at UT, was was talking to a friend who I guess works at the AD. Called me yesterday to tell me about the meeting and couldn't remeber the guys name just that it was something weird. I had someone this morning tell me that Zook was seen in Knoxville the last day or so. I called my cousin and asked if the guy's name in the meeting was Zook. My cousin is starting to believe some of this Gruden talk now

If this were to happen, it is going to be pretty damn hard for me to ever forgive Zook!

Creating a hostile workplace is indeed cause for firing.

Found it interesting that Travis Haney chimed in with this. Seems like that's a pretty well-known problem. One that could put more fire under Currie than anything, especially since Antone's resignation letter implied he knew about it and did nothing.

You absolutely cannot intimidate an employee or create a hostile work environment that includes belittling someone in front of their peers. This is grounds for immediate termination in most companies. If Currie knew, and did nothing, then he should be removed as well.

Key word. It's definitely grounds for termination and yet another drop in the bucket, but not enough for him to lose his buyout in my opinion. Making the guy provide his own transportation to away games is a captain douchebag move, but it would have to go WAY past all of that.

Butch got shooters on speed dial.

As much as I hate this and hope the NEW coach reaches out and tries to bring Antone back, this is not grounds for dismissal. "My boss is mean" is not grounds for a with-cause termination for Butch. This whole situation stinks, and it seems like Butch is trying to burn down as much as he can on his way out the door...doing just enough to keep whatever buyout he is getting.

It’s not grounds for dismissal but put it on the pile of “he ain’t all that” as a human being. That pile is gettin pretty high.

*edit: BTW, this is another stain on UTAD, it’s all over Facebook, Twitter, iPhone app alerts, it’s an aweful look

I honestly have no idea, except that it must involve compromising pictures of some sort.

i can't believe HR and or the university's legal counsel aren't demanding his removal. If what is said is true, between Davis and Kendrick's concussion, butch is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

There is a lot of confusion in this thread, especially for newcomers. Ones who have been here a while can probably ignore this, but much of the confusion and contradicting information can be harmonized by understanding a few basic concepts regarding who has the authority to do what with respect to the university. The easiest way to explain this is to state what appears to have happened thus far:

A large faction of boosters (85%, lead by Ergen) want JG. At some point, this group contacted JG and reached an “agreement in principle” on what it would take for JG to take the job (i.e., if the university agrees to all of these things, JG agrees that he would take the job). This is the “done deal” that MIT refers to. However, this is not an actual agreement with the university, as the boosters lack the legal authority to enter into an agreement on behalf of the university. But there is a “done deal” in the sense that it is known what it will take to get JG. Thus the media report that the “university” has offered JG $10M; bad reporting, as the agreement in question was not likely offered by the university officially, but the “agreement in principle” with the boosters.

So, there is an “agreement in principal” with JG. However, the booster faction knows (based on the events of 2012) that the trick is getting the university to officially agree to the deal (because of resistance from the other 15% of boosters, including Haslam). Thus they put in place a series of incentives to induce the university and the 15% holdout boosters to agree, including withdrawal of booster money (by the 85%); venture capital for the academic side; inciting the fan base into a frenzy; something as yet unknown by PM; and presumably some other things of which we are not yet aware.

It would appear that we are now at the stage of getting the university to officially agree to the “agreement in principle” established between JG and the 85% booster faction. As anticipated, there is resistance. The university’s official representatives (Currie, backed by Haslam) balk at the “agreement in principle.” Certain media sources and/or “insiders” report that other candidates are under consideration, and that the JG deal is dead, or that no talks have ever been had with JG, etc. Those reports are true in the sense that the university (i.e., its official representatives) have had no part in the “agreement in principle” and have initially rejected it. Further, official university representatives have had no direct contract with Gruden. The same is likely true in 2012 and would explain why JG might say he was never contacted then – a true statement if it is recognized that he’s referring to official university representatives.

Essentially, if you consider who has the official capacity to do what, the picture can be largely clarified. It seems that we are currently at the stage where the 85% booster faction is applying their leverage to convince the university itself (i.e., official university representatives) to agree to the “agreement in principle” with JG. Until that either fails or succeeds, BJ will likely remain the head coach.

Just wanted to quote due to the level of awesomeness..

SOON

Hopefully he did and gets fired as well

Regarding the Antone Davis resignation, he has stated pretty clearly his reasons in the resignation email. However, I also recall one of the "insiders," can't remember who at the moment, posting the other day that Butch had asked him to do something which Antone refused to do, presumably in relation to the Kendrick situation. This could be a reason why he would resign immediately as opposed to waiting for a new coach.
