I think you are correct. The Hellcat replaced the Wildcat, not the bearcat, I believe. That's a little before my time since I was a Vietnam era pilot.

Bearcat was the follow on to the Hellcat. Limited service though.

I have always had the highest regard and admiration for the WW 2 Pilots. They were outgunned many times and sometimes had no carrier to return to.
