Official Jon Gruden Thread XXII

Hyams article today saying his sources indicate that a close loss to Kentucky and Butch is still here, but a big loss and he's fired. However, Hyams said that he did not see a loss at Kentucky being the reason Jones is fired. Went on to say that Currie does not want to fire Jones and wants Jones to give him a reason to keep him. If we win last 5 games, Butch stays and will be coach in 2018. If we go 4-1 with a loss to LSU, Butch stays too.

This may be "misinformation." But it's so alarming to me because I know our administration has a history of screwing things up. There is absolutely no reason to keep Butch. Also, the fact that a loss to LSU is acceptable for Butch to keep his job. That's pathetic. This program is better than that and has higher expectations. Sadly, there's likely no way we go 5-0 or probably even 4-1 in our last five games.

So, WILL Butch Jones actually be fired in the next five weeks?

I think the part about Currie not wanting to fire Butch is because they truly are trying to create a smokescreen to cover their tracks on working on this Gruden deal a long time. Could cause problems with Butch's contract. Maybe the boosters are being the loud ones with leaks for 2.0 this time to make it harder to mess the deal up like last time.

It is a joke. I am in the right thread for a joke?

These days, it's had to tell. You've got everyone out there clamoring for coaches ranging from "toss the bank at Saban!" to "Who the eff is this guy, let me Google that."

Gruden and family are definitely moving to Knoxville and have settled on a home. One of my good friends home is one they looked at when here and his realtor called him and told him they decided to go in a different direction.

The irony is the home they decided on is a few doors down from Butch apparently. I am still very very skeptical he will be our coach or coach at the college level ever but he is moving here in the near future.

I've stayed out of this conversation for the most part but that just seems crazy to me.

1. Jones was in trouble going all the way back to UF. In a way going into the season.
2. It hit a fever pitch after UGA.
3. Gruden tours Knoxville and shows up in the bleachers for SC 2 weeks later. I am aware this trip appeared to be previously scheduled, but he sure didn't mind being visable the entire weekend around town or at the game.
4. While here, he apparently was "house shopping" (something I heard 2 hours before kickoff with SC)
5. And he now has settled on a home just a few doors down from the sitting coach that's fixing to be fired.

Now I know he very well could be buying a house here regardless considering family ties And such, but now? Literally weeks before UT will name another HC knowing his name (right or wrong) is going to come up just like 2012.

If all of that is correct, and none of that is just an outrageous stretch in any way. That may be the oddest thing I've heard in the Gruden saga, including 2012.

No one in that thread said they wanted him to stay next year if he lost close games to KY and LSU. I have not seen anyone wanting that. Some are speculating and afraid Currie would keep CBJ if he won out or only lost to LSU.

Your post made it seem everyone on VN except Grudenites want CBJ to stay and that just is not true.

I agree man. And why would he wear black in the stands? I mean I can understand not being on the sideline, but makes me wonder if he did that for specific reasons. We all saw he had no problem with showing his support and wore UT gear against Northwestern in Tampa. JMO, but if he has no interest seems like he could put a lot of this to bed to coming out and saying that. Kinda like Stoops did. There will always be people who still think he would, but not near as many. He’s never really cane out and said that, which makes you think there IS interest for sure!! I have hope that UT (mediators) and Gruden have things goin on behind the scenes and they are just waiting for the right time to announce it. That’s what I’m praying is happening anyway.

Could the “little bit of friction” between the AD and boosters be that a coach of Grudens caliber would require Saban like control of the football program, but the AD not wanting to give up that control, and then the boosters basically saying “let him have it or no mo’ monies”?

Just a theory.

Literally the first and second posts allude to that. Plus the media said the same thing today.

Regardless, the idea Jones can keep his job with a win over Kentucky is completely ridiculous. We should never base our success off a win over UK

Alright fellas, I'm going to do my best to add some substantive conjecture instead of being a negative nancy. As I see it, the biggest hope for our Grumors right now lies in how Grumaggedon 1.0 actually went down. Here are the two theories behind the 2012 meltdown.

Theory 1: Gruden was on board until the 11th hour, when Cheek and Hart screwed things up.

  • Could just be more hogwash to try and salvage the last bit of credibility that the "insiders" to the situation had. At worst, it's just another lie on top of the pile of other lies.
  • However, it could also be the real story--and I don't think anything about it is necessarily unbelievable. Cheek has long been rumored to be a thorn in the side of the athletics department, and I don't think anyone was necessarily impressed with Hart's tenure as AD. Remember, Butch was pretty far down on our list of coaches. It kind of makes sense, seeing that Hart failed to attract multiple other top name coaches to UT, that he screwed up Gruden's hiring somehow as well.
  • If theory 1 is correct, I'd say our chances of landing Gruden are a VERY real possibility. It makes more sense at this point for Gruden to make a return than it did then. The Athletic Department is in better financial shape. We have a new AD driving things. Boosters are probably more bankrolled than before. Peyton is now more fully in the mix. I mean it makes sense that if we barely failed before, we would close the deal now.

Theory 2: Gruden was never a real possibility. A single phone call was made by the AD, and Gruden turned us down.

  • I think this is the "official" story as it came from a few beat writers.
  • If this is really how things went down, then all of the things we heard from "inside sources" were just pure bs. Might have been an intentional misrepresentation of facts, or it might have been honest mistakes. Gossip can get out of control. Either way, it basically invalidates any use of "inside sources."
  • If theory 2 is correct, then I'd say our chances at landing Grooden are much much slimmer. It means that we aren't really high on the man's list. Maybe he really does want to be an NFL coach again instead of a college coach. Or that he's with ESPN for the long haul. Whatever the case, if he shut us down with a single phone call before, I'm not sure we're going to attract him now.

Anyways, that's my way of simplifying the current Grudescape.

Of course, the grumors were not totally without substance in 2012. There was mutual interest between Tennessee and Gruden. It didn’t work out — Gruden would later say that “the timing wasn’t right” — but there was at least a few flickering flames behind all the smoke.

100% for sure had some sort of negotiations with him last time. So I’ll lean towards theory 1.
