Official Jon Gruden Thread XVII

What has Jon Gruden done that indicates he'd be a good college football coach? I never really have understood the obsession with him. I think he's slightly overrated even as a pro coach.

Well he was an above average NFL head coach, so stands to reason that he’d be somewhat successful at a lower level.

I'd rather have a proven winner at the collegiate level.

Jon Gruden would be guaranteed to reel in #1 recruiting classes every year. Hiring a "proven winner" with baggage like Chip Kelly, Bobby Petrino or Les Miles wouldn't generate a tenth of the excitement from recruits or fans, so the results would be a lot worse.

The excitement level alone on the recruiting trail would be worth the cost for Gruden and top notch assistants :good!:

You think we're getting Gruden, but we're actually getting Caliendo.

Not putting any stock in this but I heard Chip Kelly was allegedly in Knoxville today. Anyone heard anything about this or is someone just trolling me?

I read this and thought, "smokescreen-its not THE man, so, meh". When 2 days ago, I'd be so happy to read Kelly rumors.

The Grumor effect.

Here's the thing about this "don't know if he can recruit" nonsense going around.

There are a certain number of coaches out there that can and would be guaranteed an in home sit down based on name alone. Saban, Urban Meyer, Bob Stoops, probably Dabo at this point. Chip Kelly could pull that off based on his name.

And most certainly Jon Gruden. The man calls to have a meeting, no recruit in America is going to say "nah, don't think so" when faced with someone they've grown up with listening to and watching on TV and is a recognized football guru. Or they've attended his camps and know what he's capable of. Regardless, they will entertain a visit if he's interested. It's up to him to sell the program and I doubt he'd have much problem doing so.

I mean, would any recruit in the country turn down a visit from Saban?

The difference being is that name will carry him for a couple of years. And then, provided he turns recruiting into performance (and there's no indication he can't), he can get those meetings based on record.

Anyway, enough of this utter BS of "we don't know if he can recruit." For the next couple of years, it'll come somewhat easy. A couple of big wins and competitive seasons, he's in the door.
