Official Jon Gruden Thread XVII

And to add a bit, the issues that were there, were the ones that kept Gruden away.

Bill Parcells once said (paraphrasing it), "if you want me to be the chef, you have to let me pick the groceries."

Having the chance to pick his players each year, is extremely intriguing to Gruden. His offense is complex. He demands a TON from his QB.

I thought the major issue revolved around Gruden not getting money for his assistants? I guess you are speaking to total control of the program? I remembered hearing that as well...

The article doesn't support the headline. Pretty weak effort, IMO. Didn't really say anything that any human on the planet with the slightest interest in this story didn't already know.

"I guess I have to say it," Saban said. "I'm not going to be the Alabama coach."

Saban acknowledged this month that Alabama approached his agent about its coaching job, but he declined an invitation to talk to the Crimson Tide.

Above excerpts from the AP, Dec 21, 2006

Moral of the story.....

Never believe the people that tell you 100% it's not going to happen and never believe the people that tell you with 100% certainty it IS going to happen.

If you were an AD would YOU hire him?

No, but as you said, he's a pretty good sales guy. You never know.

A lot of it depends on expectations. If you are just looking for a guy to keep your program clean and don't really expect to field a championship caliber program, he might do. He'd have been a good Vandy coach before Franklin got their hopes up.

Mid major, or DII is what he is suited for....somebody who would swoon over 8 wins.

The money issue is solved (on paper).

None of us know what is gonna happen. Notes are compared from several trusted sources, and then we connect the dots.

while Gruden may not enjoy the recruiting process his name alone would bring them in

I don't know. With his personality and enthusiasm/love for the game, I bet he would be a hella recruiter...

Has anyone seen any sideline photos of Gruden as a GA in the 80s? I did a google search and did not find anything. Just trying to get a feel for what it actually looks like to see him on the coaching staff and in the stadium.

We need a whole thread with nothing but soon memes. I cant post any from where I am right now, so fire away with em boys!:rock:

I don't know how much actual traveling he'd have to do. The assistants do most of that. I think, at least for the first few years, all he would have to do is get them to campus on a visit, which his name alone would do. After that, the facilities, the stadium and the fact that he's Jon Gruden would do the rest.
