Official Jon Gruden thread XL

From the beginning, two groups have defined this. The discontented, result-demanding, Gruden chasers and the establishment, participation award loving, Butch bricklayers.

The Grudes have been told there's a renewed commitment to the program. Multiple posters/sites with access have alluded to this change. Claims have been made to recruits. Some reputable posters have even claimed big boosters drew the necessary lines in the sand to move Butch out effectively after the GA game.

The status quo anti-Grudes meanwhile argue that it is business as usual. John Currie didn't really want to fire Butch. The power structure hasn't really changed. Those folks believe they have the right read on Jon Currie and UT's BOT.

Since the firing, the camps have existed in two completely parallel universes. The anti-Grudes championed by Hyams, Lowe, etc continue the basic theme that the status quo is alive and well. No Gruden; No big money for coaches; No booster or fan influence; etc. While the Grudes continue to receive information stoking their belief that CJG is coming home.

So what is reality? Are the Grudes being led along to keep them quiet during the hiring process or are the anti-grudes just so dang arrogant that they cannot recognize their obvious shortsightedness?

Either way, I think we find out soon. The establishment is starting to put out Frost/Mullen announcement rumors for next week. Grudes are prepped for Gruden next week.

My point? We're about to find out not just who we get as coach, but whether there's truly been a fundamental shift in the attitude toward the program.

If Mullen or Frost trot out, that tells me it's status quo. The lazy establishment media is propped up by UT in exchange for predictability. Academicians, who are educated beyond their intelligence, will continue to call the shots for an entity over which they are singularly unqualified to have authority. Mediocrity will be accepted as long as it provides modest financial return.

If Gruden marches out, then the "we cannot expect to routinely win 10 games" crowd has been tossed out on their collective ear. Establishment media will be "dis" established. The academic side will focus on managing and improving their part of the UT and the athletic side will handle athletics. In short, it's a reset for UT. People who have gotten results in their business careers will obviously be demanding equally successful results from their University.

Call me fatalistic, but if the status quo shows up, I think the exits get crowded. If the "safe" hire happens to be successful, it won't end up mattering because without the new commitment, we'll lose a strongly successful coach to someone who is committed.

Jon Gruden walking out on that stage is not just about getting Jon Gruden. It's about setting an expectation for our University. It's about whether we are determined to be great, or whether we just want to protect the status quo.

SOON better be the answer or "never again" may be what we get left with.

Good thing SOON is the answer. :)

Man I think you hit the nail on the head. I was just talking to my friend the other day about how we got to this point.

It started with Kiffin. We made the right move getting Fulmer out and bringing in Kiffin. Kiffin was the “ we ain’t gonna except 8-9 win seasons” hire.

Nobody could have guessed he’d bolt like that. But since then we have went from top tier expecting Championships and expecting to win every game to now.

I remember the time I really expected to win every game no matter what. Now I think we are at that point where if this next coach isn’t a great coach, we’ll never get back there again. It’s sad man, I used to love it with all my heart and be excited every week but that’s gone now. The worst part is I honestly just can’t get into football anymore right now. Two weeks in a row I haven’t watched 15 minutes of football. I used to be glued to my TV every Sat. And Sunday. When UT was good I could watch other big games, now I just don’t care. I want to, I try, but I just can’t find in my heart.

Gruden is absolutely about making the statement that “We are Tennessee and at Tennessee we win Championships and expect to win every game”.

If they trot out a Norvell, Dooley, Butch type I really believe we are finished and my football life could be finished.

You call this holding it together?

How can a lame duck interim kick a player off team with 1 game left?

sounds like TPTB need to get a handle on this situation before it blows up in their face ..... would be a great Thanksgiving if we got Grude to the hill news tomorrow wouldn't it ?

There must be some really strained relations going on in the locker room, how could it not be, and it wouldn't surprise me to hear FCBJ wasn't agging it on either
