Official Jon Gruden Thread XIV

I just put a Facebook poll of my Alabama fans on who they would want if Saban left.

Here is what I got:

Urban Meyer, Chip Kelly, Kevin Sumlin, Mike Tomlin, Bill Bellichek, Bill Cowher, Kirby Smart, Gary Patterson

Our list:

Strong, Fedora, Fisher

You think they would be happy with our list? No, why should we?

OK..

Urban Meyer aint going anywhere unless OSU kicks him out. Same for Chip Kelly. Both are at their dream jobs and Bammers would just be arrogant to assume those guys would consider going to Bama.

Tomlin is an up and coming NFL HC. Aint no way he's going to college. Bellicheck and Cowher are career NFL guys but I guess there is a sliver of hope that they could go to college.

That leaves Sumlin, Smart, and Patterson which looks remarkably like our list and much more realistic.

I think we are at a place now where we cannot afford to strike out on the next coach. If we do, things go nuts. Imagine the perception if Gruden does comes and fails (it IS a possibility). UT will seem like a graveyard of coaching. Give me a proven winner, give him a chance to get us winning more than 8-9 games a year for a span of 3-4 years and if he isn't getting better, cut him loose for someone better.

We cannot undo the last decade in a year. Just turning media perception will take 1-2 seasons, then you cant start really making huge strides in recruiting.

Yea it sure would be hard to get a good coach with the cupboards stocked with many 4* and 5* recruits...

It's been said on VN before. Coaching is the only advantage you can officially pay for in college football.

Again, is it easier to rebuild in the ACC or the SEC? SEC has top 10 teams that are strongly entrenched. ACC is almost a carousel of teams taking the top spot. I agree with a lot of what you are saying and yes gruden could be a flopp, but I just want a sure fire recruit drawing name. If I was 18, none of those names would cause me to turn down a bama or usc offer.

At the end of the day, we just have different view points.

I want someone who has proven they have capability, not to operate on some gut feeling that things might be better if we get coach X based on what we hope to be true about him.

That is a gamble I am not willing to take. It is a snowball thing, get success first, recruits will continue to build, success will continue to grow, if not there will be plenty of other coaches willing to walk in to an even more stable situation than we have now.

EDIT: I typed that while on the phone and it sounds more confrontational than I intended. I am saying I respect your view point, but we both seem to be viewing the same situation from totally different angles.

He recruited well at Auburn, LSU and FSU. He will recruit here, period. And he can coach em up. Seems you people will only except a coach that is undefeated this year. Aint gonna happen. Be realistic people!

If you would settle for richt results then you deserve fsu acc football.

If gruden was not an option ever, no Gruden thread, and Dooley was still the coach, would you not rejoice to get Fisher or Strong to replace his incompetence. Fisher, Strong, and Roman would be not only better than CDD but good with great potential hires WITH THE RIGHT SUPPORT STAFF. Fulmer won with cut and chavis. Not so much without cut ect.

If we spend 4-5 mil on a coach who can recruit and 4-5 on a great staff with some jay and tee, we could build this back. If grudes is no go, let us look at how much better we can be from where we are and where we have been the last few years.

Got to be able to recruit. Coaches like miles do well with the same formula and he is the mad hatter of coaches.

Respectfully:
Why do we all assume Gruden cares so much about what we think of him if rejects us personally? What does it matter to the rest of his career?

Not a shot at all, I just want to know why we all think he's so concerned with what we think of him. It's not as if he needs to leave the door open for coaching here in the future.

I don't think it has so much to do with what he thinks of us, but has more to do with that he has relationships with people who are close to UT or have a past with it (his wife, Manning). JMO

With next year's schedule, your opnion or mine may not matter. If whoever comes in there first year and gets destroyed in 5 games eveyone will lose faith in them.

I agree, but their expectations are not that. I don't understand why ours should be so low.

I expect us to hire Gruden, Cowher, Saban, Strong, Harbaugh, Fedora, or Kelly.

Only 2 of those names are realistic, but does that make you feel better?

I would of been happy with most of the coaching options this year with this schedule and this group of talent. We probably would of been 11-1 at this point. Looking at next year with players leaving and schedule.... No one makes me happy.

Long time lurker but i have to say this thread has been the most excited i have been about UT football for years. Based on the hope that we can get a top tier coach to turn this program around. Sad to see the hope drain out of Vol fans...as to the other coaches on the search list eh whatever....we will win a few games but probably won't be a powerhouse anytime soon.

totally on board with that idea.

Could anything different be said about Gruden?

Gruden has better coaching connections than any other possible coaching candidate right now, would definitely cost a lot of money, but you have an amazing staff... if his "demands" were really 4.5-5m for a staff, that is very close to what Bama pays. I feel if we are wanting to go the cheap route again, we are not dedicated to winning again.

And cheek will take the advice of Hart. Cheek is a academia guy, he will listen to Hart when dealing with athletics. Hart would still have end around power on gru dog, whether gruden knew it or not.

Probably true, but at the end of the day Hart is a Bammer and football is the most important thing to a Bammer. I see no way he would relinquish any football power to a HC that the fans want so badly. He would get steamrolled over every decision.

Even for a guy that isnt arrogant or egotistical, that's hard to take.

Watch it... Now looking like Hart's "big triumph" is going to be trashing the Gruden deal, fouling up the search, then "saving the day" by basically hiring the guy he always planned on....his good buddy Jimbo Fisher.

No doubt!

With road games against Oregon and UF in the first hand full of games, it doesn't look good no matter who is at the helm.

I agree. We have been beaten down as a fan base for so long we have become to think about ourselves as a mid tier SEC team only attractive to those types of coaches. That's what disturbed me about the opinions of some in regards to Gruden. The attitudesthat he or any big name coach would consider Tennessee displayed for me where we are as a fan base. While our recent history is less than stellar, our history as a whole is top ten. We should be able to attract and hire a top ten coach. And be willing to pay one. Remember when Alabama hired Saban? Everyone thought the contract was ridiculous. I think for us to turn this around, we need to be talking ridiculous too. The money that was rumored for Gruden while was a lot of money, it was still on par with Saban currently. I will probably get flamed for this but I think you have to get ridiculous with a salary. Maybe upwards of $7mil. You could attract about anybody in the college ranks and many in the pros. I think there is a correlation between what you pay a coach and the risk that he will be successful. The less you pay the more the risk. Question is how risky can the University of Tennessee be with this hire?

I can't really argue with that. I think we should lay out some money.

The problem is we don't know, might not ever know, how much of this Gruden stuff was real or just chat room BS.
