Official Jon Gruden Thread XIV

I just don't think I would have Fedora over Mora or fisher.

Mora out of those choices. Fisher is a sabanite hack and Strong and Fedora are snooze city. Don't think I can root for a coach named after the hat that the douchiest member of a group wears out to the club

Have been completely out since mid day yesterday. Made several posts, argued with people that said I said things I never did, then bowed out for a while.

I do firmly believe the blame in this, if blame has to be assigned, falls more on Grudens side than UT's. I think it became very apparent he was not wanting to come here, and his demands and unwillingness to bend at all forced UT to move on. In the end I think he was just not "up for the challenge".

Again, if he doesn't want to be here, enjoy the NFL and ESPN. Its been so long since I gave a **** about the NFL I thought Joe Montana was still the 49ers QB lol.I follow and care about one sport and one sport only, college football. The NFL is boring as hell to me.

Amen. BTW, who does Bob Greise play for now? I was watching the Dolphins last weekend and no Bob.

Because it beneath him. He sent his agent to do it instead.

I think everybody is taking the agent quote out of context.

He was specifically responding to the assertion by Hagris that they had been offered a contract and were only apart on assistant money.

He DID NOT say that Jon Gruden coaching at UT was fantasy, or anything like that.

He said that the notion that they had a contract offer was fantasy.

Why can't people understand the difference between the 2?

Maybe, but as I said last night, do you leave this situation as a "fantasy land" ?

I do not see him NOT at least addressing this. Too many ties here to humiliate UT...which that statement essentially does.

Lamonte is an ass. All I know.
I expected a press release or something from Gruden yesterday but it never came. Maybe today?

Its a toss up. I like how Fedora carries himself. I am fine with Mora, just know less about him. My list is a fan list, not an expert lol.

If you REALLY want to get down to it, and I am putting on a flame retardant suit before I say this but keeping it real.....Franklin would probably be ahead of them both and just behind Strong if not for the chance of embarrassment over a public denial and subsequent bashing of the Vols.

The only problem I have with Strong, and it seems to have been evident again thursday, is his team seems to play down to the level of his opponents. I'm a little weary of that going into this if he is our coach.

So besides Lamonte's statement yesterday, has Gruden himself turn down the job or was that fabricated too?

He himself denied that there was a deal in place for him to take the job and get a stake in the browns. Then said something about nuts and bolts and that was it.

Not reported. I have posted a number of times I have one high ranking booster that I talk to regulary. The "I was told" post are coming from him. He spoke with an assistant AD on Thursday and was told what I have posted.

I wish we had private messaging back, I spoke to an asst. ad yesterday. I didnt hear anything close to that, would like to see if the guy i spoke to is telling somebody else something different.

Maybe Hart doesn't want to make a public statement on Gruden not coming to save the university from what he perceives to be a potentially embarrassing situation on a national scale?

I cancel last years season tix and got the mini season tix deal. I will not even get the mini season tix this coming year unless we get someone good. I am finished as of now.

Glad more and more fans are willing to let them know that another bottom of the barrel hire is unacceptable

The shame would be unbearable but he is a good coach.

Mora is number one on my list right now. The money we were going to pay Gruden alone would be enough for him and an all star staff.

Both those teams that played Thursday were very good teams. Both well coached.

I've been an occasional lurker on these forums for years. Never got interested enough to join until recently, but I've been a Vol fan since the Johnny Majors came marching home from Pitt. This latest search is either the greatest con job in SEC history, or the signs of complete and utter incompetence by an inept AD and University administration.

As I posted last night, I negotiate deals for a living every day. My first boss taught me a useful lesson: "'No' is only a negotiating position."

If the parties WANT to reach a deal, they will. But if one of them doesn't, they won't. But either way, there's nothing any of us interested fans can do except sit back and watch the drama play out.

You are absolutely correct and I would add that the hardest thing for me to learn in doing deals was that it is imperative not to get emotionally vested in a deal. You have to be willing to walk away when it is not what you want. It is very easy to rationalize and justify any deal as being good. It is more fun and gratifying to make the deal. You have to be far wiser to just say no and walk away when it no longer makes sense.

Patrick trust me when I say this I have very good knowledge of how compliance works within an AD. A coach that has full control of it has way too much power when a compliance director is giving NCAA interpretation. Compliance directors can interpret rules differently from school to school to school and when an AD doesn't over see those that spells potential big trouble down the road. My opinion is a coach like gruden wants total control of compliance because he would want a director that has interpretations that are very liberal regarding voluntary activities such as watching film.

Again your key words are "my opinion is"!! Didnt Kiffen push the envelop? but blackburn kept things in line.

again point being this is only your opinion! not even any media source is reporting this.

There is another way to look at this. Perhaps Hart started getting suspiscious early on that Gruden was going to continue moving the goalposts and not sign any deal. Perhaps that is way Hart started interviewing other candidates. And finally, perhaps this is UT's way of saying enough is enough: if you want to be our coach, let's close the deal--otherwise let's both move on.

This seems like the most plausible scenario IMO (especially after reading Leonard's quotes). I think this is what bcarter is getting at, too.

I've got a good family friend who negotiates big deals for a large propane company. He used to be my Sunday school teacher. Once he told me that in negotiations, silence is the best tool. He told stories of trying to close on multimillion dollar contracts, and he would lay out the deal and then shut up to force an answer from the other party. They would stare at each other for minutes at a time without saying a word, knowing the first to speak will lose the leverage.

Unless Hart really did blow it.. He's leveraging right now, trying to get Gruden and Lamonte to "speak first."
