Official Jon Gruden Thread XIV

I doubt our biggest boosters would donate only to get Gruden. If they love this university, they understand the necessity of a strong football program and would support any great hire. Perhaps not a crummy one. That's throwing money away.

Who is the other GREAT hire on the Latest list bein thrown around?

I think your avi is my new favorite.

I remember just last year or the year before commentators saying Rivers was as good as Peyton and thinking they must have lost their damn minds.

Thanks man. It makes me laugh when I look at it!

This is where "writing checks their asses couldn't cash" comes in imo. If UT could do everything I think these boosters told Gruden it could, then he would be here. According to LWS and Skeeter that I trust now more than ever before, NO university could agree to the things Gruden wanted. I cannot imagine the boosters thinking "done deal" without leading him to believe things that weren't necessarily true.

Again, personally I think they should either donate or not donate and leave the personnel decisions to those in place to make those decisions. Having an opinion is one thing, but this went way further than simply boosters having an opinion I think.

Thanks bcarter. Makes a little more sense now. I just love Tennessee football and hate to see us where we are right now. And I do not want us to settle for someone. We truly need someone who can bring us out of the depths of h*** that we are in now. You have been very insightful today and I am grateful for that. Hopefully TN will be able to get someone who can recruit well and make us a contender again. I just don't know who that will be. Competing in the SEC is totally different than other conferences. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

On a different note, glad to see you in here. I thought you said your goodbyes yesterday and were not going to frequent this thread anymore. But glad you came back.

I doubt they would stop donating all together, but going against their wishes would greatly influence how much they would donate.

I talked to Steve Phillips from WBIR and he told me that UT had not recruited Todd Howells boy what so ever and that kid just broke the all time receiving record in the State. Now why would UT/Dooley not have recruited that kid. I guess this goes alone with what was said about Dooley not even returning calls from local coaches or recruiting kids from Tennessee.

You have:
Bama- Saban
Dawgs- Richt
Cocks- Spurrier
Tigers- Miles

In the living room of a 5 star recruit, who can we hire that helps level the playing field?

My point as well Gman. Three of the four have won a national championship. We NEED a coach that can compete with these coaches.

I still refer back to Stephen Hargis until proven otherwise.

The guy was/is adamant that UT/Hart is 100% the reason why Gruden fell through.

The guy has been the most credible person to come out of this whole fiasco.

..this includes "olebigboybob", "johnny_vn_poster", and any other message board johnny-come-lately.

I still enjoy this forum as it keeps me entertained at work and other down times.

He is the only reporter that has said that Gruden wasn't just a pipe dream. He could be right, or he could be a crackpot.

Quotes from Stephen Hargis article on Dooley and lack of in-state recruiting. So yes, Hurd knows who Gruden is...

"Tennessee can't sell their past to guys my age," Hurd added. "It's been so long since they were really good, like five or six years ago, that guys my age were too young to remember that. We only know what they've been in the last few years, and they've struggled. They need somebody to sell the future, make us want to be a part of a quick turnaround to being competitive at the highest level."

"I didn't have much of a relationship with Coach [Derek] Dooley or his staff," said Beech junior running back Jalen Hurd, who won the Class AAA Mr. Football award. "Who UT gets as its coach will help me decide how interested I am in them. If they were to get a guy like Jon Gruden, that would definitely be a factor for me. He's somebody you know has coached at the highest level and knows what it takes to win and to get you to that level. If he was their coach, that would be huge for me and I'd say for a lot of other recruits in the state, too."

Neither Strong nor Fedora have anywhere near this pop! Not even close!!!

Because Dooley set recruiting so far back, probably the worst recruiter in history of SEC.

if that is true, then Hart didn't move on to other candidates until the boosters gave the go ahead to him.

Bob Lamonte?

Lamonte lives in a fantasy world if he thinks that no one can tell he wears a hair piece :whistling:

We have to have one of the craziest fan bases in NCAA. No matter the name thrown out there the majority will spit on it. I posted this in the FF because they deserved it.

People on this board drive me crazy.

Mention Gruden, "No way he would win", "He's a 500 coach".

Mention Stoops, "No thank you, he loses one game every year."

Mention Fisher, "He's a ACC coach, doesn't translate to the SEC".

If some of y'all had diamond shoes you would bi**h about them being too tight.
