Official Jon Gruden Thread 35

IMO, the reason we are seeing differing opinions from the media is because, for the most part, they get their information from the AD. Currie is not putting out anything concrete, so that leaves the media to guess. They guess on the safe side of Gruden not coming. If he does, then they can always change their opinions.

You need to check the status of the insiders on Volnation. Some of the same ones saying it was a done deal in 2012 are saying the same thing now.

I would put more stock in Hubbs than anyone here. That's just me. Out of this whole ordeal, Jimmy Hyams has been the only person with accurate news.

He kept telling us Butch wouldn't be fired when our insiders said he would. Then, Hyams said next loss Butch is out. Sure enough, he lost Missouri and got fired.

Just don't turn into Fox Mulder with our conspiracy insiders. :)

I'm just gonna take John Currie advice grain of salt until I here it from him

I think it's safe to say that local media has no idea this go round. They've been spoonfed for years and have forgotten how to do real work.

The local media was citing Trey Wallace for other reports he had but blatantly ignoring anything he says Gruden related. It’s laughable really.

I'm leaning that way too. Better to err on the side of caution and confirm late than to get everyone's hopes up and take a hit to your credibility. That's why people generally consider Hubbs reliable... He doesn't jump on a story just to get a scoop.

SIAP

Hubbs on TOS

"With the messages on the board, emails, tweets and text messages, Wednesday was maybe the biggest GrudenMania day ever. And as long as it remains a possibility, those days are going to continue.

What do we know? Gruden and David Blackburn have spoken. That's true. But while Blackburn went on record Tuesday, he was careful to never say that Gruden was for sure coming. He said he simply wouldn't rule it out.

We have talked to a couple of sources who have ties or know Gruden who feel like it's not going to happen for Tennessee. But Gruden is talking to people in the coaching industry for sure. It's something he always does.

We don't believe that Gruden has had any formal discussions with any Tennessee officials, but as we said on Wednesday, Gruden knows a lot of people in and around Tennessee that he talks with. When Gruden said he hadn't been contacted by Tennessee on the Mike and Mike Show, we believe he meant in a formal fashion, because Gruden has talked to people around the Tennessee program.

There are definitely some around Gruden who think it's real possibility that he might take the Tennessee job. We don't think all of this is some kind of big troll job. That being said, multiple independent people don’t see it happening. Bottom line, there's still a lot of “got to see it to believe it” thoughts out there from folks.

The bottom line on Gruden, the #Grumors will continue and we will continue to chase them.

Now, as for John Currie, we know he got to Charlotte via a commercial flight Tuesday, and the million dollar question is where did he go from there and why? That remains a million dollar question, as we haven't been to confirm his current location. And no one is happier that he's located at parts unknown more than Currie.

In terms of possible candidates, we hear that Mississippi State's Dan Mullen would listen to Tennessee. But we are told that Mullen is not a lock to move anywhere. He's more comfortable in Starkville that many think, and he has a good team coming back. Throw in that he's making nearly $5 million a year.

As for others, clearly Memphis' Mike Norvell is interested in Tennessee’s opening. There was some rumblings that he's been contacted by someone associated with Tennessee, but we have not been able to confirm that. Norvell is well liked by many in the coaching world and it would appear he's on an upward trajectory. He could be in play at Tennessee, Ole Miss and Arkansas — if the Razorbacks make a change. However, due to the timing of Jeff Long's departure as Arkansas AD, who would do the firing and hiring of a football coach in Fayetteville?

While we mentioned D.J. Durkin's name on Tuesday, it would appear at this point he's a down the line guy at best. Another Power 5 name we are checking on but haven’t found anything concrete with is Dave Dorean at NC State. Rumblings in Raleigh are that he would be interested in moving on.

Meanwhile, it doesn't appear that there's been any movement or contact of any kind with Oregon’s Willie Taggart. TCU Gary Patterson has been a popular name connected to Tennessee’s opening, but a connected source said the longtime Horned Frogs coach is not interested in the job.

Lastly, one recruiting note beyond the Cade Mays interview from Wednesday afternoon, junior college defensive end Dorian Gerald told us Tuesday that he’s still seriously considering Tennessee despite reopening his recruitment. Gerald is actually slowing down the process and won’t sign until February. He's planning a January official visit to Tennessee now with a final decision set for NSD."

it's amazing that, those getting their info from the AD either have no clue, or are not at liberty to say anything. i can't make up my mind which it is in this case.

I totally agree with your accessment of everything that went down yesterday! Thanks for trying to keep us encouraged!

BTW, did you used to go by JUMPMASTER, back in the old GRIDSCAPE days?

Not trying to answer for Hawk, but JUMPMASTER was in logistics and I don't believe he was a pilot. I exchanged emails with Jump (I won't divulge his real name) a few times and the last I heard I think he was in San Antonio enjoying spending a lot of time with his kids (active in sports) with not enough time to do his fantastic recruiting updates he was famous for. He is a great Vol fan.

Not really.
He just likes to water down his drinks. He likes a glass of coke with a splash of Jack.
We all like a glass of Jack with a splash of coke, if any at all.
It's just how he rolls but it still makes him a drinker.

I laughed ... perfect !

Ditto.

It's like driving by a construction project without a sign, and you keep waiting on enough of the building to be up so you can tell what it's gonna be. You want a nice restaurant cause they neighborhood needs one. Then the day comes when you drive by and see the sign for the new auto parts store. :cray:

Or a bank.
Or a used car lot.
Or a dentist office.

I've gotten a little cold feet. Let me explain why without being told to "get out"

I think Jon Gruden would be an outstanding coach for the University of Tennessee. I'm absolutely 100% sure of that. The huge concern I have is whether or not his heart will be fully in coaching, initially or two years from now?

You see, for most of the coaches in college and pro football, all they can do his coach. All they want to do is coach. It's who they are, and that's all they can be. Whether they have arrived at their final destination, or they are climbing the ladder, they give everything to what they love to do, because it's all they can do and all they want to do.

So what if Coach Gruden doesn't find the success or Joy that he wants in coaching? Would he be honest about that and resign? Or would he 'phone it in' like Jones did this year and get the buyout and retire or go to the pros?

I think you have to admit that is a legitimate concern. If his heart is fully in it, he will be a great coach or Tennessee. If not… my concern is that we are forcing the issue instead of letting Coach GrUden walk down the path he wants at his own pace.

There’s pessimism and there’s optimism. You can theorize either one at the same level and never know the answer til it happens.

I’m stepping out for a bit to run some errands and get packed up for our family trip tomorrow. I’m hoping the word comes out today. Stay strong and keep the faith Grudenites.

Bubba’s exit last night, along with the words from Atlanta and others, make me feel that we are in a very good spot.

I mean, if UT doesn’t get him we always do something ****ty when we are desperate...Dooley, Butch, Holly, Tyndal.......

Lets keep the faith

I know its hard, but the truth is, we are better off than we were before Sunday. We were going absolutely nowhere with Butch.

No search committee this time throwing out names that won't turn us down. Thats no way to hire a coach. You have a guy say no, you sweeten the deal. He says no again, you throw in something else. You make your guy file a no contact order on you before you give up. Not until then, do you move on

I don't think anyone thought it wasn't real. Idk...not trying to rain on your parade, but it just doesn't seem that important to me.

Not doubting their info that Currie took a couple of commercial flights, but if he were going to Tampa why didn't he just step on the private jet with everyone else?

Conspiracy theory - smokescreen. Just seems like a lot of work for little or no gain.
