Official Jon Gruden Thread 35

I think Currie is the difference this time. I don't think he will settle for a second tier coach and even if, God forbid, we miss on Gruden, he will be doggedly determined to get a top line coach.

Out of curiosity who are those top line coaches if Gruden says no?

Behind Gruden/Kelly I just don't see another top line option. Maybe Patterson but I think that ship sailed. Everyone else is a gamble IMO.

I don’t understand the “Gruden can’t coach” or “Gruden can’t relate to players”, etc. stuff we keep hearing. He compiled a 38-26 record(if my morning brain hasn’t kicked in and my math was right) for a moribund Oakland Raiders franchise (never a losing record in 4 seasons there) just 3 losing records as Head Coach in 11 NFL seasons that’s pretty good for any coach. Heck Belichick had 4 losing seasons in 5 in Cleveland and his first in New England. Anyway, Gruden also seems to have a good relationship with many former players and while I’m sure he’s an intense personality to deal with(I grew up a Bucs fan because they were Orange and White go figure) I’m familiar with Chucky watching him on Sunday and have always loved him as a Coach. So as to why he keeps being mentioned as not a good coach it just bugs me. I would look forward to him as Head Coach. He has Championship pedigree and loves this University that’s enough for me.

I look forward to hopefully hearing “The next Head Coach at the University of Tennessee, Jon Gruden”. Blessings to those who have shared their legitimate inside information and thoughts. You all are awesome. To the others in this thread like me with zero insider information, rock on ? and keep hoping we’ll have our White Whale soon and this program will return to its rightful place as an elite program. Grude On everyone.
Swain or one of the other reliable guys I believe said that those who are saying, " he isn't coming" don't know jack. And the reason being.. he has not publicly come out and said anything to anyone.

I’m new to all this but why would Hubbs have COMPLETELY different information regarding this than everyone else. Many insiders are on here saying done deal and that it’s so close but Hubbs posts that there have been no formal talks with Gruden yet.

Why is that?

He was talking about it a few minutes ago. He said the plain landed around 1 pm yesterday and has not left as of now. But he did say that the plane did go to Cali., Then Nashville and then tamp.

He could not confirm the alleged meeting.. because well. He isn't there.

It was discussed yesterday. The company that owns the plane has offices/operations in CA and FL.

The Grude News, thoughtful insights for this morning. For those just joining us...

OX0yQ.gif

Good morning everyone. And what an interesting 24 hours it's been since the last update. This morning, I'll apologize in advance on not having all the up to date news and tidbits from the previous 24 hours. Instead of reading through pages and pages of info and coming up with a recap, I took the night off. Watched some TV, ate a calzone with the dog and just relaxed. And came to an epiphany...

It's over.

I can't say that with any certainty, but it's my belief this search is over. I do know that after 35 different threads, more than 285,000 posts (at the time of me writing this) and 20.2 million views (as of 11-15-2017) of everything Gruden related, our journey is almost at an end. It actually came to me about a week ago when I noticed a subtle change in one of our mysterious posters. Beaver stopped providing riddles and insight and started being, well, just a regular poster. He seemed calm. Like a man who's job was at an end and knew the outcome. He wasn't nervous, wasn't trying to pass on information. Just started being normal, yet still limited in his posting.

Combine that with our regulars Boro and DTO grinning like the Cheshire Cat and being eerily calm about the whole affair. And if this was about to fall apart, I doubt they would be around to get their backsides kicked a second time. Bubba saying goodbye and leaving as quickly as he came on board. Atlanta being mysteriously quiet save his posts from yesterday. Other posters are coming forward with information that the deal is pretty much done. The atmosphere is one of completeness. Of seeing the tape flickering at the end the marathon. And barring any unforeseen problems, I believe Gruden to be our next coach at Tennessee based on the actions, and inaction, of those we have come to trust.

Rumors are swirling, information is leaking out, people are talking. However, I believe the information is somewhat behind in that world and everything is as done as it could be. And we don't have Gruden, but rather Gruden is joining us in our love for Tennessee. I don't know when or how the announcement will be made, but I feel like we are spinning our wheels trying to figure everything out and waiting on every Tweet and message board post to provide us with the answers.

The answers are right in front of us. Others have pieced together the intricate details of "how" and inner workings of the deal like SFD and Hawk, but I just feel based on the human element things are done. And we must wait for the official announcement.

From the entire Volnation News Team, I'm Grand Vol and are we there yet? That is the question.

Have they SAID "it's a done deal."? I've seen some be very vague, and then say they are going silent until it's over...

Funny thing about that post by UTLEGEND from TOS.

It said nothing about anyone saying Gruden wasn't interested, just that some that know him said they'd have to see it to believe it.

But, Patterson said he wasn't interested.

"See, Hubbs said Gruden ain't coming. All you guys in the know don't know anything. Let's concentrate on a realistic candidate like Patterson. Him saying he wasn't interested is just a smokescreen. Currie has been talking to him."

What fun is that?

In the Gruden threads we've had "insider info" regarding VC firms, Academia, Private planes flying all over the country to hire assistant coaches, MNF buses in K-Town...and more!

All to hire a football coach?

Hubbs on TOS

"With the messages on the board, emails, tweets and text messages, Wednesday was maybe the biggest GrudenMania day ever. And as long as it remains a possibility, those days are going to continue.

What do we know? Gruden and David Blackburn have spoken. That's true. But while Blackburn went on record Tuesday, he was careful to never say that Gruden was for sure coming. He said he simply wouldn't rule it out.

We have talked to a couple of sources who have ties or know Gruden who feel like it's not going to happen for Tennessee. But Gruden is talking to people in the coaching industry for sure. It's something he always does.

We don't believe that Gruden has had any formal discussions with any Tennessee officials, but as we said on Wednesday, Gruden knows a lot of people in and around Tennessee that he talks with. When Gruden said he hadn't been contacted by Tennessee on the Mike and Mike Show, we believe he meant in a formal fashion, because Gruden has talked to people around the Tennessee program.

There are definitely some around Gruden who think it's real possibility that he might take the Tennessee job. We don't think all of this is some kind of big troll job. That being said, multiple independent people don’t see it happening. Bottom line, there's still a lot of “got to see it to believe it” thoughts out there from folks.

The bottom line on Gruden, the #Grumors will continue and we will continue to chase them.

Now, as for John Currie, we know he got to Charlotte via a commercial flight Tuesday, and the million dollar question is where did he go from there and why? That remains a million dollar question, as we haven't been to confirm his current location. And no one is happier that he's located at parts unknown more than Currie.

In terms of possible candidates, we hear that Mississippi State's Dan Mullen would listen to Tennessee. But we are told that Mullen is not a lock to move anywhere. He's more comfortable in Starkville that many think, and he has a good team coming back. Throw in that he's making nearly $5 million a year.

As for others, clearly Memphis' Mike Norvell is interested in Tennessee’s opening. There was some rumblings that he's been contacted by someone associated with Tennessee, but we have not been able to confirm that. Norvell is well liked by many in the coaching world and it would appear he's on an upward trajectory. He could be in play at Tennessee, Ole Miss and Arkansas — if the Razorbacks make a change. However, due to the timing of Jeff Long's departure as Arkansas AD, who would do the firing and hiring of a football coach in Fayetteville?

While we mentioned D.J. Durkin's name on Tuesday, it would appear at this point he's a down the line guy at best. Another Power 5 name we are checking on but haven’t found anything concrete with is Dave Dorean at NC State. Rumblings in Raleigh are that he would be interested in moving on.

Meanwhile, it doesn't appear that there's been any movement or contact of any kind with Oregon’s Willie Taggart. TCU Gary Patterson has been a popular name connected to Tennessee’s opening, but a connected source said the longtime Horned Frogs coach is not interested in the job.

Lastly, one recruiting note beyond the Cade Mays interview from Wednesday afternoon, junior college defensive end Dorian Gerald told us Tuesday that he’s still seriously considering Tennessee despite reopening his recruitment. Gerald is actually slowing down the process and won’t sign until February. He's planning a January official visit to Tennessee now with a final decision set for NSD."

Sounds to me like he knows more than he's telling and he's back to 0-2%.

Depends on who your close communication circles are. All media have different relationships. Perhaps Hubbs isn't in with the people in the know. Perhaps he is in exact relationship with the person in the know.

Officials at the US Geological Survey are reporting a dramatic increase in indicators for significant seismic activity. The vast majority of the indicators are located in the eastern Tennessee region around Knoxville. One scientist told us "Using our advanced mathematical extrapolation programs, we believe a major earthquake will occur along the banks of the Tennessee river in downtown Knoxville. We believe this earthquake will be so severe, it would register 10.2 to 10.4 on the Richter scale. I know there are many who will scoff at the possibility, but I've been vetted, check my stats!"

Another scientist we spoke to, Dr. Elmer Grumorsniffer, told us the impending earthquake will send shockwaves throughout the entire southeastern US and could be felt as far away as Columbus, OH and Ann Arbor, MI. Dr. Grumorsniffer also warned of severe psychological trauma as a result of the earthquake. "We've already been in contact with Emergency Management officials in Tuscaloosa, Athens and Gainesville to warn and prepare them. Citizens of those locations have demonstrated a severely depleted ability to cope with challenges of this magnitude and we want to get the word out early to aid in the preparation". When asked to describe the type of psychological fallout he expects to see, Dr. Grumorsniffer replied "Wailing and gnashing of teeth would not be an overstatement!".

When asked if he could provide any additional words of warning, Dr. Grumorsniffer told me, "Soon people, very very SOON"!

Since this is the official Jon Gruden thread...I'm gonna put this here, then DUCK..!!!
I just don't see the reason for all the "Gruden worship".
I don't find the kind of Head coaching experience IN COLLEGE that justifies the over-the-top excitement some folks have about this guy.
There's no question, we're going to pay millions of dollars for a top coach, so perhaps we need to look at what we are hiring if it's Gruden.
NCAA head coach record: NONE
NCAA recruiting record: NONE
OK...Pro record...???
Looks like he has been the very fortunate successor to a couple of good teams already built by someone else. When he did build a good team, it looks a lot like he went out with his bosses checkbook and bought it by finding the best free agents available and paying them whatever it took to come on over.
That's not recruiting great kids all while operating within NCAA rules...that's hiring mercenaries in a league with VERY few restrictions (relative to NCAA recruiting rules).
Just my opinion, and worth what you paid for it.
