Official Jon Gruden Thread 33

One thing I do worry about is I think Jon loves what he does now, and if enticed to come coach UT, if, after a couple years, figured he didn't like the grind or the rules of college, I could see him bolting.

I just have to say...Jay Cutler sucks! I remember when he was at Vandy and everyone talking about how great he was going to be. lol yeah right.

Smokin' J Cutty just doesn't, and never will have the drive to be a great QB. He has never seemed like he even cares that he plays the game professionally. He does have a cannon though. Tyler Bray has always reminded me of Cutler.

on a serious note...you can't argue the star factor in recruiting...i'm betting he could close pretty well. just a guess. x's and o's don't worry me at all, in fact, there's nothing strictly football related that would worry me.

i think Gruden could and would put together a really good, if not great, staff.

i think Gruden is a great match up finder, and i think from a game planning standpoint, you'd be hard pressed to convince me he couldn't do that as good, or better, than most anyone we went up against.

there are drawbacks though. i think he'd be uber dependent on his staff for all the "college" stuff....i'm not sure he'd love recruiting or the restrictions on football 'student athletes' face. i don't think the Big Orange Caravan would be #1 on his list of things to do in other words.

being a head coach at a program like this is a lot more than the x's and o's. and i think gruden weighs that against what he really does love...and that's the x's and o's. plus, the roster turnover you have to experience in college makes it difficult to consistently do the things you might want to do. on the plus side, i'd find it hard to believe he'd NOT be a great evaluator and developer of talent. but does he have the patience to do so, all the freaking time?

i think the positives outweigh the negatives. and the negatives can be overcome, assuming he's in the right place mentally speaking, and with a good staff around him that can navigate the stuff he doesn't like.

i'm only at about 40% chance he comes here, so i don't think it's much of an issue when all is said and done.

but, if you can really get him....do it.

Thoughtful input, thanks!

I can't believe Gruden is a pawn in this. I don't doubt the complexity of big business , but isn't this a stretch?

I'm sure JG would like everything on his terms but the way I'm reading into it academics get's a big boost if JG comes to UT. On the other hand if he declines, I'm not certain that offer is still in place.
I do hope JG takes a look around him at the empty seats in Charlotte tonight. The NFL is taking a nosedive which is gonna effect the owners' pocketbook soon. Many can skirt around the matter but it's due to the players' actions during the National Anthem that has many fans ticked off.
I want Jon to want to be here but there may be a string or two attached but hopefully it's not major. Referring to him as a pawn may be a stretch and that could cause him to buck if, it is true or he feels that way. Anyway the pasture appears to be greener for JG and family in Tn. than any other place for a while.

He did win with Dungys players. But thats OK. He built the Raiders. It's a wash IMO.

2 reasons I'd be interested...

1-Recruits. He's the new Madden. His name transcends the actual game. The kids will flock.

2-And even more importantly...I believe he's too smart not to come in with a ridiculous staff. If Currie is willing to spend on Gruden, he better to be ready to buy some assistants too.

Haha.. Hubbs is going to report on every potential coaching candidate to fill out Gruden's staff then say, "I give it 10% chance that Gruden is the next coach."

He built a Super Bowl quality team, was traded by them to Tampa, and beat that team with Tampa in the Super Bowl.

He knows every single person in the NFL on first name basis. Big plus for recruits and assistants.

Has studied the playbook of 32 teams for almost a decade.

Won the Super Bowl in TAMPA.

No college coach has won the SB.

Jimmy Johnson disagrees.

Yet Dungy couldn't win with his own players

You stole that from me.

I think Gruden is a long shot. But I do believe he would be successful. The guy is one of the biggest and most well known names in all of football. He would form a good staff, and would be an excellent recruiter. It’s all about the players.
