"Gruden has said that the team will wear the Smokey Grey's against Alabama. Guys, there is still a long shot on Gruden coming. I give it a 11% chance." - Hubbs

Why you think Jon Gruden is really a good fit for Tennessee. Some of us are not as sure as you. And please, the first one who says, "Duh, he won a Super Bowl." goes to the end of the line. Specifics most appreciated. Point-counterpoint encouraged.

Gruden is an offensive guru. He has broke down plays with guys like Manning, Brady and Rodgers. All of them respect his knowledge. The guy studies film like crazy. He has said he still draws up plays. Listen to him talk, his football IQ is up there with the best of them. He has NFL experience. He has ties to Tennessee. He graduated from Tennessee. His wife was a cheerleader at UT. His son goes to Tennessee. Gruden seems to love Tennessee.

FWIW: I talked to Brent earlier, and maybe it was just my suspicious nature, but he avoided the Gruden talk. When I asked about the press conference and what he thought about Currie's responses, he talked about how the press corp basically "drew straws" to decide who would throw the Gruden question out to Currie. He did say that he asked about the search firm to gauge a timeline. He said he believes Currie is way down the road with a new coach meaning that he is close; otherwise, he would have hired a search firm. Twice now he has said that he believes Currie has made a mistake by making it known that money is not a problem. He doesn't think it is a good business decision.

So what should Currie have said? “I’m sorry folks, we are strapped for resources and won’t be able to afford to hire a coach worthy to serve this great University?”

on a serious note...you can't argue the star factor in recruiting...i'm betting he could close pretty well. just a guess. x's and o's don't worry me at all, in fact, there's nothing strictly football related that would worry me.

i think Gruden could and would put together a really good, if not great, staff.

i think Gruden is a great match up finder, and i think from a game planning standpoint, you'd be hard pressed to convince me he couldn't do that as good, or better, than most anyone we went up against.

there are drawbacks though. i think he'd be uber dependent on his staff for all the "college" stuff....i'm not sure he'd love recruiting or the restrictions on football 'student athletes' face. i don't think the Big Orange Caravan would be #1 on his list of things to do in other words.

being a head coach at a program like this is a lot more than the x's and o's. and i think gruden weighs that against what he really does love...and that's the x's and o's. plus, the roster turnover you have to experience in college makes it difficult to consistently do the things you might want to do. on the plus side, i'd find it hard to believe he'd NOT be a great evaluator and developer of talent. but does he have the patience to do so, all the freaking time?

i think the positives outweigh the negatives. and the negatives can be overcome, assuming he's in the right place mentally speaking, and with a good staff around him that can navigate the stuff he doesn't like.

i'm only at about 40% chance he comes here, so i don't think it's much of an issue when all is said and done.

but, if you can really get him....do it.

Ok so something has been bugging me about all this “no way he is coming” talk for the exact reasons people
are giving...so I’m gonna throw this out there for nothing other than my sanity...1. He makes $6 mil a year where he is now...that is obviously going to be decreased soon. But even if it wasn’t what we will offer another tier one coach would probably be about the same percentage raise that we would offer Gruden. 2. He is happy where he is...Mullen , Patterson ect..seem pretty happy where they are at. 3. He has a cushy job, why would he want to leave? The other coaches mentioned do too..not near as high as expectations at Tennessee. People who give #3 obviously don’t understand the desire of successful people is to add more success. Great people desire great accomplishments and challenges. So going by these three excuses no good coach would want to come here. So if Gruden is a no way so is Mullen, Patterson and heck even Saban himself because they all three could use those excuses. Ok I’m done now. Just wanted to throw that out there. Imo Gruden is just as much of a possibility as any other major coach out there.

If Gruden did come in, I think he'd have a time getting folks to curb their enthusiasm on immediately winning. Kinda like Michigan. He'd bring steady stream of recruits in, and his charisma w/ press and players would definitely resonate.

One thing no one talks much about is his current job. Think about it, probably spends more time watching film than most coaches, because they have other responsibilities. He's been studying current trends and tendencies for years. Yes, he's been away from coaching, but sometimes you're better when you've stepped away and seen different vantage points, and observed and learned from every NFL coach in the business.

He came to Tampa which was the worst Franchise in the NFL and won 3 division titles and A Superbowl(against the team he just built). Dungy only won 1 division title. So please drop the he won with Dungys players crap. And the fact he seems to know what it will take to accomplish his goal (control/money for right assts) which is his main bargaining point.

I was not very inspired by Currie's PC yesterday, but I really like the fact that he's personally calling recruits and telling them to hang with us because we're going to get our guy. I know we have and will suffer some decommits, but I think him doing that is holding most of the class together. A quick turnaround and hiring a great coach could get everybody back on board. Soon.

I'm just glad Currie reminded us over and over and over again that this is "The University of Tennessee" and these are "student athletes". I was confused for a minute.

hmmm......somthing to ponder...

Whatever happened to the bender avi guy? The old gruden threads reminded me of him and I haven't seen him post in forever. What was his sn?

AC, Escape Goat was fun. You too. The old Gruden thread almost caused me to jump off the Batman Building after Butch's introduction so I have intentionally stayed away from here best I can this time around!

That said, good to see you this time around and let's hope we see Goat soon. You're right, the Gruden thread isn't the same without him

I think we can summarize that today's Gruden alert level is at
siren-goal-horn-scores-minion-gif-5208832.gif

He built a Super Bowl quality team, was traded by them to Tampa, and beat that team with Tampa in the Super Bowl.

He knows every single person in the NFL on first name basis. Big plus for recruits and assistants.

Has studied the playbook of 32 teams for almost a decade.

Won the Super Bowl in TAMPA.

No college coach has won the SB.
That's because they usually stay in the NFL, which is where I expect Gruden will be if he ends us back in coaching again.
