The general public and media has made thinking Gruden is coming as being foolish. How many different programs and/or nfl teams has he been rumored to be going to?

-Dallas
-Raiders. It was actually reported by the editor of Pro Football Weekly he had already signed and was on his way there a couple years ago.
-Bears
-Arkansas. That was a pretty hot rumor there for awhile. U guys remember. Then he wore an Arkansas red tie on MNF and speculation went through the roof. Their message boards were all over it.

....and his name gets brought up with ANY and all high profile openings in college and pro. Mostly pro. Now Tampa rumor is gaining steam with the speculators.

As noted by other posters...some are almost made to feel embarrassed by believing Gruden will come to UT. There are many real legit reasons he would come to UT. More money..his competitive drive..his family ties to East Tn AND the university.

Let's see what happens.

I like Jon Gruden, but I don't think of him as a great coach. His winning percentage is barely over 50 perfect as a coach. I'm sure he'll recruit great, but we saw what a mediocre coach who is a great recruiter can do.

Yes, I'm aware he won a Superbowl. I also know of an national championship ex-coach that we don't want either from the SEC!

Bottom line, I like Gruden to much to want to see him fail here. We need a proven college coach, and he's not that.

Let's move on.

So, I think there are a few things in your argument I disagree with.

(1) I don't think " VolNation" was being tested, as much as all of VOL NATION. This site is the free site with the greatest accessibility, and thus ease of tracking actual interest.

(2) The purpose of testing the waters was to add value to the proposal. In a vacuum, offering a deal is a reasonable thing, but with the added data from this type of social experiment you can solidify the case.

(3) To a point you made later - using a data polling service would accomplish the opposite result. The purpose of the stalking horse is that no one is aware. If the pollsters were calling people in Knoxville asking about head coaches, it would immediately give everything away.

I think the analysis is correct, as far as Beav is concerned. He is assuredly the Stalker Horse. However, I'm not sure who actually sent him. It's convenient to say Ergen, but it could be just about anyone.

He did say, "These people don't miss." This type of maneuver could be part of that. People who don't ever miss in big transactions have contingencies out the wazoo. This popular rabble-rousing may be part of those contingencies.

I agree with your assessment. Who sent him is intriguing.

Had not thought about the UTAD (Currie) angle, primarily because of some of Beaver's earlier comments.

Seems I recall some less than flattering comments in one post re: the UTAD, but maybe it was the UTAA side.
