You might let him coach those games to rehab his reputation so he can get another job and reduce your buyout.

What are the chances that Butch would have done anything to rehab his reputation against LSU? More likely just the opposite.

He has been right.

Funny story! Flew home from NYC this morning and had a layover in Atlanta. Wisconsin HC Paul Chryst saw my Tennessee shirt. News had just broke Of Butch getting fired and I had my headphones on. He told my wife he wanted to mess with me and tell me he was interviewing for the Tennessee job😂. Looking at his record, I’d say he wouldn’t be a bad choice at all🤔

Oh my lord. Someone shut the screen door, flies are getting in.
It’s not gonna happen. But hey if it makes you feel better just keep on, keeping on. I’ll make sure to check back in on this thread once the head coach at Tennessee has been named. Hint for you........it won’t be a Gruden.

He has not won a conference game this season and he has played against teams (and lost) that are far worse than the two remaining teams. Coaching those final two games would likely make him look worse (finishing 0-8 in conf) thereby further reducing the chances of him having a quick turnaround and finding a new job, which would lessen the chances of reducing a buyout.

So let’s say it’s Gruden. There’s no way we can wait till after Christmas to have him recruiting. IMO, if it’s him, it HAS to be in the next 7-10 days. Or, does his name alone save this class? I don’t know he wouldn’t be distracted or a distraction on MNF.

Rev, I think the window is actually pretty predictable.

It won't be before the end of the season. Currie needs to spend at least a couple of weeks on the problem so it's evident he considered a reasonable number of alternatives ("did his due diligence" in the current parlance).

For much the same reason, it will probably extend at least a week beyond the end of the regular season; even if Currie had no intention of seriously considering any sitting coaches, he must let the world believe that he had time to get approvals and talk to them.

But he wants to have the new coach on board well before the 20th of December, because of the new early signing window. As much before it as he can, to give the new coaching team time to reach out and massage the egos of 20-30 young recruits.

Put all that together, and you get something like this: earliest announcement around the SEC CG (2 December); latest probably around the 10th of December.

This is even in the most extreme possible case, such as if he already has a signed contract with JG (or anyone else); even that doesn't really change this likely timeline.

So I'd look for something in that window. Maybe up to a week before, and possible as late as 4-5 days after, but probably in the window 2-10 December.

I believe you, Doyle and myself are in the same life raft. We don't want someone to accidentally sink the boat before we get to shore, but we're pretty sure it's going to happen no matter what we do.

Thanks, sometimes I forget there are many others like me in here ... well if she sinks I plan to do down with it, but keep a life raft close by :)

For the guys all over Grudens sack.
Question:
1) he hasn’t coached in 10 years, what makes you think he can come in and start winning
2) who would he bring in as assistants?
3) will the same people be calling for his head after he goes 5-6 the 1st year?

#2 I personally know a VFL who has been contacted for a position on the Defensive side. Don’t ask, I will not elaborate any further.

I don't think you understand these threads in the slightest.

1. You don’t forget how to coach
2. A group of badasses
3. No

Is there anyone here that can detail what went down to bring Majors back to UT as coach? I see a parallel with Gruden because I think it is critical that we hire someone with some true orange blooded ties.

An observation or three:

Eschewing a search committee or search firm is a pretty bold move. Inserting others into the process gives an AD a degree of shielding. Without one, it's 100% Currie's decision.

So he's clearly a very confident person. That's the first observation.

But he also has to believe he can come up with a new coach the community will applaud. Because, self-confident or not, his destiny is attached at the hip to this hire and that's a big rock in the ruck sack.

So he's got at least one big name already in his pocket. Bigger than Mullen, I'd say, bigger than Frost. If not JG, at least a Patterson level option. Proven winner who has already said he wants to come to Tennessee.

And that's comforting to know. Not as comforting as Currie walking into a press conference tomorrow to say the words Jon F'ing Gruden, but still comforting.

Reasonable, well thought out, tends to make sense.

Not bad at all.

The one talked about JG not coaching in ten years, if and i think it’s a big if, JG were to come to Tennessee it would be the biggest off season story since Saban went to Bama. Every kid wanting to play college QB wants to eventually be on his QB show on ESPN. He brings instant credibility back to this program. Like I said though, BIG IF

This.. ESPN recruited for bama his first two yrs.
