Official Jon Gruden thread 32.

Wow this thread blew up today. It just took me 2.5 hrs to catch up and I was speed reading. A couple observations:

1. I woke up in a tired/bad mood and let out a loud woooo when I read the news. Instant good mood from there. It actually scared my wife a little.

2. Not using a search firm is HUGE and so was Currie's grin IMO.

3. OLEVOLFAN might have a real source.

4. If Butch is really calling recruits to tell them to decommit then he is next level narcissistic. He is seriously straight up full of himself.

Currie said he thought that was a silly notion basically.

I thought the NO SEARCH FIRM was the biggest nugget to come out of the presser today

It was pretty much the only nugget. There are 2 things Currie could've said to shoot down the Gruden talk:

1. Jon Gruden will not be the coach here - or something to that effect.
2. We'll be hiring a search firm.

He said neither of those things.

It think you have to look at Currie as a business guy to understand why there is no search firm. He may have his guy, I can’t say. I knew he wouldn’t use a search firm even before I was told pre-presser. The most important thing to Currie is his ability to control the true flow of information. That is why most booster insiders may be starting to go silent... out of respect for the AD stage of the process. Even if he didnt have his guy, search firms are sales people, and sales people talk. Currie wants to be the guy with the info and he doesnt share with just anyone. This is a positive thing for a Gruden possibility. With no search firm, I would expect this to be over fairly quickly.

We also know that Currie spent his tenure at K-State anticipating having to find a replacement for Snyder. Is it possible there's no need for a search firm because he's already very familiar with his options?

What!? How!?

Maybe whoever Beaver is has taken on all these different personas to to interact with all these different avenues, I mean the guy did create a Twitter account after his first appareance here. He seems to be rather savvy at it too so leads me to think he is not new to the platform.

Good point. Could absolutely be that he's a dozen different people in a dozen different places, measuring Volunteer nation mood in a dozen different ways. Good catch.

Olevolfan said ask me how I know and Garth brooks sings that. I don't know who this MR initials are.. what celebrity is that,

Matthew Ramsey - he sang (band Old Dominion) “No Such Thing As A Broken Heart” at CMA Awards

Edit: ummm maybe it’s Mitch Rossell 😬

Correct, he said neither of those things. Man, I like your style.

Anybody else hearing Jon Gruden may be in play? A lot of smoke coming from my sources. Also hearing Butch has been let go.

Gonna meet my sources behind Waffle House to hash out the details. Will keep everyone posted.

Yes, the no search firm was huge. I thought equally as huge was the almost dismissive nature he mentioned the "$13 some million buyout". He acted like it was pocket change. Which leads me to believe that booster(s) stepped up and said we got this.

Add that with the Cheshire Cat grin when Gruden was mentioned, I think it was a great presser.

Thats an interesting perspective I haven’t thought of. If I were a betting man, I would say in Snyder’s last game coached, we will find out he passed in the 3rd quarter and coached the rest of the game Weekend at Bernie’s style.

I like that angle, but it has a flaw: the anonymous third party has to have interest in the waters being tested.

In this case, the waters are VolNation.com, which is a microcosm of the wider Volunteer nation.

Can't come up with a reason why Ergen (or any of the Big Boosters) would have much of an interest at all in testing the waters of this community. As a big-$$ guy, he knows what he wants, and is only looking for allies to put pressure on the university's leadership.

VN.com isn't a potent threat to put pressure on the university leadership.

For the life of me, can't come up with a scenario that links the waters of VN.com, the stalking horse of Beav, and any hidden actor. We're simply not an important piece in any equation concerning the coaching search.

Which means we have to be reading it wrong. Beav's not the stalking horse...we're applying the concept wrong, somehow....

So, I think there are a few things in your argument I disagree with.

(1) I don't think " VolNation" was being tested, as much as all of VOL NATION. This site is the free site with the greatest accessibility, and thus ease of tracking actual interest.

(2) The purpose of testing the waters was to add value to the proposal. In a vacuum, offering a deal is a reasonable thing, but with the added data from this type of social experiment you can solidify the case.

(3) To a point you made later - using a data polling service would accomplish the opposite result. The purpose of the stalking horse is that no one is aware. If the pollsters were calling people in Knoxville asking about head coaches, it would immediately give everything away.

I think the analysis is correct, as far as Beav is concerned. He is assuredly the Stalker Horse. However, I'm not sure who actually sent him. It's convenient to say Ergen, but it could be just about anyone.

He did say, "These people don't miss." This type of maneuver could be part of that. People who don't ever miss in big transactions have contingencies out the wazoo. This popular rabble-rousing may be part of those contingencies.

That’s because it is pocket change. I never get why so many fans get so concerned about the amount of money involved. It’s really a non-issue.

Tell me this 92... why is Gruden to TN so unbelievable for the masses? People lay out the reasons but with with any amount of research you can see it’s not as far fetched as they’d lead us to believe.
