From 1963-1965, Hal Wantland did everything as a Vol. he had 442 yrds rushing, 262 yrds passing, and had 42 receptions for 589 yards. Wantland finished his career with 1,529 all-purpose yards. He was responsible for 16 touchdowns. He was a captain in 1965 and was voted best blocker in the SEC in ‘65.

Side note......he scored the first TD in the famed “Checkerboard “ end zones.

On October 29, 1983, Johnnie Jones set school records of 234 yrds rushing (since broken) and 41 carries, in the Vols 7-0 win over Rutgers.

On September 8, 2001, Travis Stephens ran for 206 yards and tied the school record of 41 carries in the Vols 13-3 win at Arkansas.

40 days.......

On November 24, 2007, after a penalty put the ball on the 40 yrd line, Erik Ainge hit a wide open Quinton Hancock on the first play of the 4th Overtime for a 40 yrd touchdown. Kentucky would score, but the 2pt conversation failed. The 52/50 victory secured a trip to the SEC Championship Game.

39 days.........

In 1988, J.J. McCleskey was a 5’6” 135 lbs walk-on out of Karns HS. By 1992, he was a captain and helped lead UT to two SEC Championships, three bowls, and a record of 38-9-2. J.J. played corner, safety, wide receiver, and special teams. He had 11 tackles in the Cotton Bowl win over Arkansas and had 3 career ints. As a receiver McCleskey had 39 career receptions for 452 yrds.

37 days.........

On September 28, 1985, Tennessee hosted #1 Auburn. Following an Auburn turnover, Tony Robinson dropped back and hit Tim McGee on a 37 yard TD to put the Vols up 14-0! Robinson was on the cover of SI and “Bo Knows” a 38-20 defeat!

36 days........

In 1932, the Vols won the Southern Conference and had a record of 9-0-1. The offense avg 23.8 points per game. But, it was the defense that was the reason for the success. The Vols D gave up 36 points in 10 games. Beattie Feathers, Deke Brackett, and Murray Warmath were the leaders. Feathers became a great NFL player. Brackett was a success as a coach, but his life was cut short in the plane crash in 1970 that killed most of the Marshall football team. Warmath won a National Championship as a HC at Minnesota in 1960.

On October 16, 1982, #2 Alabama came to the Worlds Fair with an 11 game winning streak over UT. Leading 27-21with a little more than 7 minutes left in the game, Chuck Coleman took a handoff from Alan Cockrell and raced 34 yards into the history books. A 2pt conversation gave the Vols the 2 TD cushion needed to preserve the win, 35-28!

33 days.......

In 1926, Tennessee hired Robert Neyland to “even the score with Vanderbilt.” In his first stint with the Vols (1926-1934), Neyland had a record of 76-7-5. He won the Southern Conference in ‘27 and ‘32. During those seasons, UT had 5 undefeated seasons and unbeaten streaks of 14, 28, and 33 games (still a Tennessee record.)

From 1980-1983, Reggie White become a Vol legend. He recorded 293 tackles (201 solo), 4 fumble recoveries, 19 tackles for loss, and 32 sacks. The “Minister of Defense” was a SEC Player of the Year and a consensus All-American. He is one of two Vols in the College and Pro Football Halls of Fame (Doug Atkins)
