Definitely one of the easier non-conference schedules we have had in awhile.
And yet wouldn’t surprise me a bit for UT to struggle early and lose a couple they shouldn’t have. Meanwhile we SHOULD be here crackin up at the BVS, haters and trolls coming out the woodwork; knowing a find is gonna happen.

Off topic I know, but CRBs style of building a whole is greater than the parts squad is gonna win out in the biggest games eventually.(he’s too good a coach not to be rewarded imo) this squad has as good a chance as any.

Those are the schools we have played the most all-time, three permanent rivals.
Historically thats a rough set of 3. I know all 3 have been down recently but they have all been overall good programs. Florida and Kentucky are the 2 most dominant SEC basketball programs along with Arkansas. Vandy has never been great but they were really good they fell off hard like 2017-2020 but have been back to their normal 20+ wins a year lately. I think it bodes well for our SoS going forward.

Well nobody thought we would ever be a national champion in baseball and that happened so why not basketball? We have the roster, we have the coach, we have the “want to”.

Best OOC home is against a terrible Syracuse team that is in the midst of a rebuild. Just embarrassing at this point (and this is not a Tennessee only complaint, this is throughout college basketball). Louisville and Illinois on the road is fine but hate playing Miami as a neutral site game. I rather that be a home game against a Big East opponent like Villanova or Creighton.

Rather they just play 30 SEC games, home/away, for the regular season at this point.

I meant that having those 3 as our permanent 3 is GOOD because iron sharpens iron. If we had for instance UGA, Ole MIss and Missou it would suck you can swap out Either of those for Miss State or Oklahoma depending on your tastes. all are fairly weak basketball programs though. So this is a better outcome for us.

It's awesome to hear our fans (rightly) complain about weak schedules. It shows the faith we have in our program.

We’re replacing 4 of our top 6 players from last year with transfers who are having to adapt to a new system. To me it would be coaching malfeasance to schedule a super competitive OOC schedule. CRB will need to try out many different player combinations to learn the best way to utilize his new talent. Tough to do that when you’re fighting down to the wire to win the games against top 20 teams every night. Still don’t understand why so many of our fan base haven’t learned to trust our HOF coach - he knows what he’s doing! JMO, TIFWIW, AARP

I never made any criticism towards Barnes

I never said I needed a super competitive OOC schedule

I think having one P5 OOC opponent on the home schedule that isn't expected to finish in the top half of their league a) still sucks and b) sucks worse for the fans that pay money to see competitive basketball

Yeah, Barnes has never been afraid to play a tough OOC schedule, and I’ve always commended him for that. But very often our tough schedule is due to neutral site games, MTEs, and road games.

We have had a pretty weak home OOC schedule the last few years. If you live in Knoxville, you basically have maybe 1 game to look forward to before January. Illinois turned out to be a solid opponent last year, but that was it. Syracuse being the only noteworthy home opponent is just sad.

Before someone jumps in and says “You do neutral site games for recruiting” I understand that well. I just have always hated it. Boring atmosphere, never sells out, usually late tips, etc.

Heck, the football team can’t even sell out Charlotte. College sports should just always be played on a campus when possible. Outside of Feast Week, I’d be behind getting rid of all neutral site games across college basketball.

Hard to see anything worse than 10-3 OOC, 11-2 or better seems much more likely. Gotta think we should be looking at another 23+ win season under Barnes.

I am glad to see Louisville back on the schedule and i remember when Peterson almost beat them a couple of times.

I would have liked to see what UCLA assistant coach Denny Crum could have done here after Mears retired because of depression issues.

The Montana game should be interesting.

Sure, but juggling the home and homes can be tough. We got Illinois at home last year. That was a very good Illinois team. Syracuse is the SEC/ACC Challenge, which is selected by the conference. We are always going to play 2-3 neutral games. It’s the nature of the game these days. We will get Louisville at home next year.

We always get some form of UK, UF, Texas, Florida, Arkansas, and Alabama at home in conference.

To be honest, the RPI favors neutral or road games. But since Barnes has been here, we’ve played GTech, UNC, Wake Forest, Memphis, Wisconsin, Cincinnati, Colorado, and Arizona in home and homes- pretty darn good.

The negatives of the OOC schedule are just magnified because we played Syracuse last year in Maui. We made out well with the ACC-SEC challenge last year so I'll allow it. I can't really knock the matchup with Miami either because it's in MSG in December, you say yes to that regardless of opponent. I might even make the trip for that one with family there and I've never been to MSG.

Overall, the OOC schedule is a little light this year, especially at home but I trust Rick Barnes 100% and expect the schedule next year will be back to where we have been used to. I love that Rick has completely abandoned that second exhibition we used to have in favor of a closed door scrimmage against major programs.

I think I just hope anyone with tickets that can’t attend or don’t want to watch the disappointing names/games on the schedule know I’d sure fill the seat.

Not sure if this shoe fits but if so just sayin… jk 😂

But seriously

That neutral site game in December on a Saturday night at 10PM in San Antonio against NC State was heinous. That kind of stuff should never happen.
