Offering to double Gundys salary

Why do people care about the salary? We don't pay it. And Gundy's a hell of a coach. Can't go cheap in this market, especially with all of the openings.

This. Our problem isn’t money. Our problem is getting an established coach willing to come here. So here’s the plan:

1) Find the best coach willing to come here.
2) Pay him what it takes to get him here.

If we hire Gundy for $8 million, don’t feel like we missed out on Petersen, Patterson, etc. They didn’t want the job.

I think he is a good coach but 8.4 million seems a little over the top.

Its not if you are trying to keep you job if you are Currie and Davenport and are trying to stop the other boosters from taking your hiring power from you if you are Jimmy Haslam.

Shows they knew they tried to pulled a fast one and now trying to keep from getting burned.

T. Boone Pickens is a businessman, and he knows that $8+ million for Mike freaking Gundy is bad business. I'm sure he'll tell Gundy that if he can get 8 mil at Tennessee, to go and get it and good luck.

And paying Gundy 8 mil is financial malfeasance.

Bold move by Currie and I wish him luck. I hope Gundy takes the job and fans have the patience to allow him a reconstruction period to get a competitive SEC program built. He is starting from the lowest level the Vols have sunk to since the program began in the 1890s. Gundy can coach.

If there's any truth to the 8 mil per year from Tennessee, I can't imagine how ridiculous the buyout will be.

If winning 10 games every year with a mid-level program isn't good enough for fans of a team who just tried to hire Greg Schiano.....JFC

Dude averages 8.5 wins per season. He won't get 10 wins in the SEC. You guys are crazy and desperate. Overpaying for Gundy? House of Haslam strikes again.

One thing is for certain is he turns down 8.4 million that door should be closed forever. I'm tired of these guys bucking for more money at their present school and using another school as leverage.
He should have already accepted no one should have to think twice about that offer.

You're an idiot. He has a 75% win percentage in the shadow of OU. The resources available at UT will propel him further up. This is a Homerun hire.

I'd rather see two scenarios happen. Take 8.4 million, give 3 million per year (work in incentives) to Kiffin and the remaining to him to build a staff.

OR

Give Les 3 million per year, Tee as OC/HCIW at 1 million per year and fill out rest of staff up to 9-10 million all in.

8.4 for Gundy is truly absurd.

Interesting you say that. I've actually thought about Les with the coordinators mentioned in my previous post and Lane as HCIW. $1.5MM would bump up Kiffin by $500K. He's making around $1M at FAU I believe. I think Tee sees himself as HC if he goes anywhere.

WE are morons if we pay Gundy 8 million or 6 million

Seriously, if UT brass is willing to pay for a proven coach.. why do you care how much it costs?

That's the logic that makes no sense to me. You want a good coach but expect them to come solely because we are Tennessee?

That's a good way to never make a good hire.

8.4 is absurd, but Currie screwed this up so bad that we will now overpay for any HC we go after now.

Other HCs have seen this fiasco play out the past few days and will use Curries mess to get paid handsomely!

Gundy isn't a good coach! I'm tired of people saying this! The big 12 is horrible!!! He has done NOTHING there!

Maybe I'm over thinking this but, anyone else think that by making this offer more public, it's a strategy to make other coaches sit up and take notice? Even if Gundy declines, who's to say the Petersons and Shaws of the world wouldn't suddenly show interest?

I don't care if we've got to pay Gundy 12.5 mil a year.

Currie better be in there with no holes barred and told not to come back to K-Town until Gundy has signed on the dotted... line.

After this weekend Gundy would be a grand slam and was the first choice on my list from day one.

I'll believe it, when I see it.

Please don't say no holes barred... please

No HOLDS barred.. much better.

No HOLDS barred is an old fighting term

No HOLES barred... well it's not a fighting term...

He averages 8.5 wins a season in a one team conference and has unlimited resources with Pickens. Is what it is.

That is a hefty price. My brother just sent me this one.

Yep. If they hire him for 8.4M he will be on an extremely short leash from the fans. He will be expected to win big and immediately.

Ridiculous. This roster has holes, kids that need to be elsewhere and is vastly over rated from a talent standpoint. The culture also stinks. Gundy needs to flip this roster. Ain't gonna win big for several years. Good coach but he doesn't walk on water.

People want a BIG name coach on the cheap :lolabove:. Well folks, that s*#t aint happenin! In the position we are currently in... it's going to cost us 7-8.5 mil to land a Gundy-type coach, a proven and sought after head coach with a mullet and personality that I think Vol fans will appreciate.
